We are pleased to invite applications for a Research Assistant to undertake research and administration related to an Augmented Reality (AR) game trial with young people in schools. This is an exciting opportunity to work with an educational digital games company and a senior clinical psychologist, Professor Helen Pote, as part of an Innovate UK funded trial.

Adolescent mental health is a growing societal issue. Traditionally, CAMHS support young people with mental health challenges. Given the pressures on these services, it is increasingly the responsibility of schools to support struggling young people.

The current project explores the implementation of an innovative digital mental health AR boardgame utilising evidence-based psychological strategies to support adolescent mental health and wellbeing in schools and health settings. The project is a partnership between PlayWellforLife and the Psychology Department at Royal Holloway, it builds on an established clinical-digital industry collaboration and focusses on the real-world implementation of the game.

The post holder will be required (under supervision) to; search relevant literature and contribute to game design drawing on the psychological evidence base, undertake the design and running of research and evaluations in a school, set up stakeholder meetings, organise participant recruitment, record and analyse data, prepare research reports and support with academic paper preparation.

This post is newly created and would suit an organised individual, with initiative, who holds a degree in Psychology, alongside an interest and competence in qualitative and quantitative research methods. Excellent team-working and communication skills are necessary as the work is interdisciplinary and the post-holder will need to convey psychological ideas to young people to a range of professionals across education, academia and digital industries.

Experience of working with adolescents is desirable.

The post-holder will join an innovative and supportive team of 22 clinical-academic staff working as part of the DClinPsy at Royal Holloway with a range of expertise across child, adult, learning disability, health, older-adult and neuropsychology specialities.

The post sits within a vibrant Psychology Department, internationally recognised for world-class research and teaching - ranked 3rd in the UK for research in the last REF and with very strong ratings from our students for teaching (UK NSS). The Department has excellent facilities, including MRI, EEG, TMS, eye trackers, behavioural testing suites, and social and infant observation labs, as well as strong links with clinical organisations, government, industry, and charity affiliations.

We are proud of our atmosphere of strong collegiality in the department, and we are highly committed to principles of equity and diversity. Information about our existing research and teaching programmes can be found here: http://www.rhul.ac.uk/psychology/home.aspx.

The post offers hybrid working with the base in Egham, where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London. Some travel to facilitate partnership working with partners in Bristol and the UK will be necessary.

For queries on the application process the Human Resources Department can be contacted by email at: recruitment@rhul.ac.uk or via telephone on: +44 (0)1784 41 4241.
