Job overview
An exciting opportunity has become available for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our CAMHS team in Hemel Hempstead for a year. This has come about because the existing consultant psychiatrist has taken on a clinical director role for the Provider collaborative and he would require 6 PAs to backfill his clinical duties.
Hemel Hempstead is part of West CAMHS team which also includes St Albans CAMHS team. The successful candidate will be based in the Hemel Hampstead Team.
This is a newly created post to address the growing demand on our service.
The successful candidate will join the existing 2 Consultant Psychiatrist in St Alabans clinic and will backfill for another consultant psychiatrist in Hemel Hempstead clinic. There are also 2 higher trainees ST4-6 in the team and 2 core psychiatry trainees and a GP trainee as well 2 SAS doctors and the multidisciplinary team which consists of psychotherapists, psychologists, family therapists, social worker and clinical nurse specialist and independent prescribers.
Main duties of the job- To work closely with the multidisciplinary team and other agencies in health and social care as appropriate.
- To have responsibility for assessing a young person’s mental state, formulating a diagnosis, advising on treatment and monitoring the risks a young person poses, alongside the MDT
- To manage a psychiatric caseload offering assessments and reviews
- To undertake referral meetings, case reviews as required.
- Offer clinical leadership and work closely with the Senior Leadership Team in enhancing the collaboration with other agencies in health and social care relevant for the clinical and quality outcomes.
- To participate in various medical staff meetings within the Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust as necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities- To participate in regular Audit and Quality Assurance programmes to improve and maintain the high standard of service. Participation in POMH audits is encouraged.
- To provide advice, support and consultancy in a variety of settings to minimise risk.
- To provide liaison and consultation as required with a local acute paediatric service.
- To provide opportunities for case-based discussion and teaching to the MDT.
- To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and provide reliable written communications to General Medical practitioners/liaise with other professionals as required.
- To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively on electronic patient record as required
- To take an active role in the pathway and CAMHS clinical governance in liaison with the Senior Leadership Team (Meetings are held every Tuesday at midday) and contribute to the development of internal clinical pathways/processes and ensure smooth pathways for patients moving between the Tier 4 services.
- To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed by consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trust’s personnel policies and procedures. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.
- To provide support to the High risk Pathway and clinical nurse specialist
- To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
Person specification
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria- MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Higher qualification in the field of psychiatry such as MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent qualification approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
- Relevant higher degree, e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
ELIGIBILITY
Essential criteria- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
- CCST in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or its equivalent or eligible for CCST in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; OR Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Child and Adolescent psychiatry; OR within six months of achieving CCT/CESR at the time of interview.
- Section 12/Approved clinician approval.
- In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
CLINICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria- Experience of the full range of clinical responsibilities expected of a consultant in CAMHS psychiatry.
- Experience of close collaborative working with social care and other agencies.
- Experience of working with service users who have complex needs within CAMHS
- Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
- Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others.
- Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
- Excellent degree of medical knowledge in relation to CAMHS
ACADEMIC SKILLS LIFELONG LEARNING
Essential criteria- Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
- Participated in continuous professional development.
- Participated in research or service evaluation.
- Able to use and appraise clinical evidence.
- Has actively participated in clinical audit.
- Holds a full valid driving license and access to a car (Unless you have a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995).
- Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post.
- Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken.
- Experienced in clinical research and / or service evaluation.
- Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
- Has led clinical audits leading to service change.
- Experience of organising and overseeing psychotherapy training program for psychiatry trainees.
