An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to undertake the role of Leadership Development Trainer.

This is a challenging role that requires the successful candidate to design and deliver a range of leadership training including promotion framework courses to newly promoted Sergeants and Inspectors and civilian equivalents, as well as a variety of other courses covering general leadership techniques, organisational procedures as well as operational policing skills as well as.

This role also requires the successful candidate to provide training skills, via an existing college of policing course, to newly appointed police trainers.

As the role requires the successful applicant to deliver leadership training via classroom based courses, experience in the design and delivery of classroom-based training is essential in order for the candidate to perform this role to a credible level.

An innovative approach to course design and delivery is also sought.

Good verbal and written communication skills are also essential as the successful applicant will be required to present to large classes of students as well as liaising with a number of guest speakers to arrange inputs, including chief officers.

You will also be arranging schedules of training and carrying out all of the administrative tasks required to run a course so you will also be able to demonstrate good organisational skills.

The training you will be required to deliver contains both leadership theory as well as operational policing elements to newly promoted Sergeants and Inspectors as well as support staff equivalents, so a knowledge of working within an operational policing role (or similar leadership role) or a relevant qualification in policing is essential in order to achieve this.

The role also requires the successful candidate to utilise a number of Microsoft office products in order to create, amend and organise their workload of training. A sound knowledge and experience of using products such as Power Point, Excel and Word is therefore also required.

This opportunity would suit a highly-motivated and dynamic individual who can bring their wide experience into the classroom in order to train and prepare the next generation of police leaders.

As the role advertised is primarily for a classroom-based trainer a level 4 CET qualification has been identified as the minimum training requirement to fulfil the role by the national college of policing. Candidates that hold this qualification (or equivalent) would be desirable, however training would be provided for the right candidate.

Essex Police offer agile working which designates that certain roles can offer flexibility in terms of place of work, including some home working. The specific requirements of this role will be discussed during the interview stages with candidates.

The extent of flexibility will be agreed through individual assessment with the line manager to assess operational requirements and individual’s suitability for home working. In the event that home working is agreed for the successful candidate, there will be a requirement to regularly attend the contractual workplace, as agreed with the line manager.

Training Situational Assessment

Candidates will be assessed on their ability to produce a short 10 minute example training input, followed by a 5 minute opportunity for questions from the audience (assessors).

It is recognised that many candidates will have not undergone any formal training as a trainer, however the assessment will be of their potential to operate in this environment.

The assessment will focus on the ability of the candidate to structure the 10 mins appropriately, making best use of the available time, considering the use of visual aids, considering audience participation and dynamic response to audience questions.

The key overall assessment will be focussed on was the candidate able to impart knowledge to the audience.

Essex Police offer incremntal increases within this salary band, therefore the salary for this position will rise to a maximum of £37,692.00.

CV’s, covering letters or attachments are not included in the shortlist. Within your “reason for application” answer, please refer to any experience, skills, and abilities you feel you have that will make you suitable for this role, based on the role criteria stated in the job advert or job description.
