Job overview

The School Nurse Clinical Support Worker will work within their scope of practice carry out aspects of care,give support and advice, information and signpost. The SN CSW will be part of the National Child

Measurement Programme (NCMP) for Walsall, attending schools and other educational establishments to weigh and measure children and young people. The CSW will be involved with inputting of NCMP data and producing the letters. The CSW will support the nursing team in the delivery of health interventions e.g. clinics, health education sessions, parent and child groups.

Main duties of the job

The School Nursing service is part of the wider Children’s Health services which provides Community based services for children and young people (aged 5-19 years). The School nursing service works with stakeholders across a number of settings and organisations to lead delivery of the Healthy Child Programme (5-19) to improve child health outcomes and ensure that families at risk are identified at the earliest opportunity.

The overarching aim of public health services for children (5-19) is to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of children and families. The School nursing service is a workforce of specialist community public health nurses who provide expert advice, support and interventions to families with children and Young People between 5-19 years, and help empower young people to make decisions.

As a clinical support work you will work under the direction of the Clinical Team Leader provide efficient, effective and comprehensive administrative and clinical support to the School Nursing Service. You will carry out visits to schools as part of national child measurement programme (NCMP) to weigh and measure children and young people.

You will support the nursing team in the delivery of health interventions e.g. clinics, health education sessions, parent and child groups.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Visit school and education setting to weigh and measure children and young people as part of the national child measurement programme (NCMP).
  • Support Senior Nursery Nurse and community staff nurses in the delivery of parenting and children’s intervention groups
  • Support community staff nurses and school nurses in assessment clinic sessions to include e.g. weighing and measuring children
  • Respond to routine external and internal telephone queries from clients, carers/relatives, members of the general public and multi-agency professional staff giving appropriate non-clinical advice and sign posting
  • Plan, organise and prioritise own workload, while accepting direction and delegation from higher level administrative staff, clinical staff and managers.
  • Exercise good judgement, tact and discretion when dealing with patient inquiries, providing a basic identification of needs within the scope of the job and providing non clinical advice to patients and relatives about admissions and appointments as authorised by the clinical team and team leaders.
  • Support administrative staff with general office duties e.g. photocopying, faxing and printing, handling of post, making and sending appointments, filing as agreed with the Professional Lead
  • Receiving, welcoming and directing visitors as they arrive in the department
  • Support the preparation of relevant documentation for the NCMP including preparation of consent form.
  • Input information e.g. NMCP measurements, clinic appointments, attendance and DNA at groups onto databases or computer systems that is then handed off for analysis.
  • Demonstrate own job role tasks to new staff, bank/agency staff and/or students
  • Use of email in an effective and professional manner to communicate with other departments, clinical and non-clinical colleagues

Person specification

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of engaging positively with children and families in a community setting
  • Substantial experience of working within a healthcare setting
  • Basic knowledge of childhood health & development
  • Basic understanding of the need to safeguard children
  • Sound understanding of the principles of confidentiality and data protection

Essential criteria
  • Ability to use Microsoft packages e.g. EXCEL, word, E-mail
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal with a range of people in different contexts
  • Ability to carry out delegated duties and responsibilities in a timely fashion without direct supervision

  • Travel around the borough in a timely manner throughout the working day
  • Ability to seek support from senior practitioners as appropriate
  • Demonstrates use of own initiative
