Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced hepatology nurse to join the Hepatology Clinical Nurse Specialist Team within the Barts NHS Trust. The successful candidate will take the nursing lead in coordinating hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance.You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide seamless care and support to this patient group.
Liver cancer is the fastest-rising cause of cancer related deaths in the UK. The most common form of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) which makes up 85% of all liver cancers. We are looking for a confident nurse to help engage patients that are on HCC surveillance and attend their appointments, support to create a data base and coordinate patient care.
You must be a team player but also confident working autonomously and managing a patient case load. You must be well organised, have excellent time management skills. You will need advanced interpersonal skills to communicate with a wide range of internal and external agencies, to educate other health care professionals and to provide support to patients and their relatives.

Main duties of the job
The role of an autonomous Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) within the Hepatology service focuses on liver disease, particularly in patients requiring HCC surveillance. The CNS provides expert care, education, advice, and support to patients and their families through nurse-led clinics, a designated telephone support line, and staff training.They coordinate patient care, manage a HCC database, and improve patient outcomes by facilitating early cancer detection and multi-professional collaboration.
Key responsibilities include:
Managing the care pathway for HCC surveillance in line with NHSE standards.
Educating patients and families on the importance of surveillance.Contributing to service improvements through audits and performance reviews.
Using advanced nursing skills to assess, diagnose, treat, and prescribe care plans for complex conditions.
Working independently but also as part of a larger team, collaborating with healthcare professionals across NE London to enhance service effectiveness.

Qualifications and knowledge
Essential criteria- 1st level registration.
- Relevant 1st level degree
- Advanced communication skills training
- Prep for Mentorship course.
- Relevant post-registration education such as the Liver Course
- Leadership training or qualification
- Specialist clinical course ideally in hepatology/gastroenterology or cancer
Experience
Essential criteria- Experience at Band 6 and above in hepatology or associated speciality
- Ability to manage a caseload of patients autonomously
- Teaching patients and other professionals
- Working in a multi-cultural community
- Knowledge of audit and research and its application
- Counselling experience
- Resource Management
Skills
Essential criteria- General knowledge of current health care and nursing issues
- Up to date professional knowledge
- Computer literate and report writing including use of Excel
