Job overview

To manage the provision and maintenance of NHS Estates buildings, mechanical and specialist services, plant and equipment to ensure a safe and suitable environment for the care of patients, visitors, and staff.

Main duties of the job

Provide technical and specialist advice to managers and staff in mechanical systems and disciplines.

To specify and manage all mechanical services, systems and contracts across multiple sites.

Travel between Trust sites as required

To provide evidence based efficient, cost effective and robust mechanical engineering contracts to ensure full compliance with statutory instruments, NHSE guidance and industry best practice.

To ensure all Hospital mechanical engineering systems are maintained in a safe condition and are fit for purpose.

  1. EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential criteria
  • Must have a good standard of general education plus additional knowledge attained via a recognised and relevant diploma level (at HNC/HND level) in Building Services/Mechanical Engineering/Construction related discipline or approved equivalent training
  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree or equivalent plus specialist knowledge acquired through relevant post-graduate courses and experience to masters equivalent level
  • Completion of a structured training program in engineering discipline for a minimum period of five years
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in Building Services/Mechanical Engineering/Construction related discipline or equivalent experience.
  1. EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
  • Experience of managing engineering building services, operational engineering maintenance and repair services
  • Experience and knowledge of operational budget management
  • Experience of managing contractors
  • Experience in specifying and managing engineering contracts
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of working with engineering systems within complex organisations and environments
  • Experience of working within and developing a ‘safe system of work’ and dealing with health and safety issues
  • Line management experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Estates Management/Project Management including the concurrent management of multiple projects and services
  1. SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal to a wide range of individuals and groups at all levels internally and externally
  • Computer literate and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite of programs, BMS and CAFM systems.
  • Able to analyse data and produce reports using a range of software packages
  • Can work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Can apply the knowledge, experience, and judgement necessary to demonstrate, in a practical sense, the safe operation and maintenance of specific systems/equipment.
  • Can demonstrate the analytical skills and judgement required to identify/diagnose a range of defects and failures in relation to specific systems/equipment and what actions to take
  • Analyse complex data and information regarding building services, performance, maintenance, and legislative compliance to ensure the Trust’s buildings are maintained appropriately;
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of HTM’s, HBN’s and Estates specific legislation
  • Demonstratable knowledge and approach to maintenance management and methodologies a structured, analytical, and best practice approach to maintenance management
  • Good knowledge of energy efficient working practices within building services engineering
  • Demonstrable record of accomplishment of working effectively within and through multi-disciplinary teams
  • Able to use small tools and carry out fine adjustments to building services on a regular basis
  • Identify and resolve causes of conflict or resistance.
  • Reflects systematically on their personal performance and modifies behaviour accordingly
  • Flexible and adaptable in changing circumstances.
