An exciting opportunity has presented for a pharmacist to join our cancer pharmacy team. We are looking to recruit to the post of Rotational Pharmacist in Cancer who will play a pivotal role in managing the pharmacy service provided to cancer patients.

UCLH, in partnership with University College London, has been designated one of the country’s five comprehensive biomedical research centres and there is an on-site early phase cancer clinical trials unit.

The UCLH Macmillan Cancer Centre opened in April 2012 and encompasses our busy outpatient clinics and daycare treatment facilities as well as our growing ambulatory chemotherapy practice.

The UCLH Grafton Way Building opened 2022 and supports our expanding haematology service including haematopoietic stem cell transplants and CAR-T therapy. Chemotherapy production services are delivered from a state of the art unit situated within the Macmillan Cancer Centre.

The pharmacy cancer team is well integrated into the cancer directorate and provides a high-quality and progressive pharmacy service to cancer patients.

Main duties of the job

The main day to day responsibilities would include:
  • manage the day-to-day delivery of, and support the development of, clinical pharmacy services to cancer patients
  • provide safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of medicines to cancer patients
  • work closely with the multi-disciplinary team and undertake an active role in the safe provision of medicines to cancer patients

To maintain and further develop the pharmacy service to cancer patients, we are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated pharmacist to join our lively, progressive and dynamic pharmacy team.

Our ideal candidate will be:
  • interested in helping us develop and deliver our vision for a patient-focussed clinical pharmacy service
  • able to drive directorate and departmental clinical governance issues, clinical audit, practice research, service improvement projects and more
  • keen to further their career within cancer services

The post will provide comprehensive cancer clinical and technical pharmacy experience through a competency based training programme. You will have the opportunity to work in a broad range of clinical haematology and oncology specialties and settings including inpatient wards, day-care, outpatient clinics and ambulatory care.

You will have a Postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy (or equivalent experience) and post registration employment experience in a hospital setting, including working in a cancer speciality.

Person specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Master degree in Pharmacy, or equivalent.
  • Pharmacist Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Undertaking or completed a Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience and expertise.
  • Evidence of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
Desirable criteria
  • Independent prescriber, or willingness to undertake an independent prescribing qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum two years post-registration experience as a clinical pharmacist in hospital
  • Broad knowledge of clinical pharmacy practice
  • Experience of pharmacy clinical practice in the hospital inpatient setting
  • Actively seeks to improve the ward and clinical services provided to enhance quality of care to patients.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of verifying prescriptions for systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT).
  • Experience in oncology and/or haematology clinical practice
  • Participation in multidisciplinary health services research.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Effective time management and demonstrates the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent ability to prioritise workload and work accurately under pressure without direct supervision.
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • IT literate, including use of spreadsheets to capture and manipulate data, search for evidence-based practice, presenting complex information.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and commitment to the principles of clinical governance
  • Demonstrates awareness of research evidence in practice.

  • Able to identify risks and develop risk management procedures.
