Job overview

We are looking for a candidate who holds a CCT in Paediatric Emergency Medicine to join the paediatric emergency unit which is staffed 24/7 by paediatric trained nurses. The successful candidate will join the existing consultant in paediatric emergency medicine to help support the development of the paediatric emergency department and the training of speciality trainees on their paediatric block.

The Paediatric Emergency Department team is responsible for the provision of Emergency Care to children up until their 16th birthday and sees a wide variety of pathology. The unit is supported by seven day band 7 paediatric nurse cover. The general Emergency Department team includes 5 trainee registrars, 3 specialty doctors, a senior clinical fellow and ACPs heading up the senior decision maker tier.
Along with Emergency Nurse Practitioners, 10 junior doctors and 4 F1s. The successful postholder will help in supporting the training and education of both the medical and nursing staff as well as undertake quality improvement work in line with The Standards of Care for Young People.

The paediatric emergency department has close links with the paediatric unit, neonatal unit, PICU (under WATCH) and safeguarding teams.

This post is fixed term for up to 6 months due to departmental changes.

Main duties of the job

This post is a consultant post within the Paediatric Emergency Department and if also trained in the general ED, on a 50:50 split with on-calls being for the whole department on a 1:8 basis. We are looking for individuals who hold a CCT in either Paediatric Emergency Medicine from a Paediatric or Emergency Medicine training route.

If successful the appointed consultant would join an existing team of 8 Emergency Medicine consultants, one who is also paediatric emergency medicine trained and one SAS doctor. Applicants from a paediatric grid PEM route will also be considered.

This post will suit a trainee within 6 months of CCT or consultants in a transition period with a specialist interest in Emergency Paediatrics and enjoys the friendly and welcoming environment of a district general hospital. The successful applicant will join a well established friendly team and you will help us to continue to drive forward service improvement.

It is intended that the new Consultant will:

  • With the existing PEM consultant lend senior support to the management of paediatric cases and support “Consultant Sign Off”
  • Maintain the hours of availability of immediate Consultant opinion
  • Enhance the reputation of the depart through multidisciplinary education training and research. Support the department in community projects.
  • Work with the paediatric team to continue the development of the unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Multidisciplinary team working is a key component of working within the UHBand involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues.
  • Providing evidence-based care for patients in the multidisciplinary setting.
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including administrative duties associated with patient care.
  • Development of subspecialty interests that fit with the strategic needs of the department.
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to the postgraduate and under graduate medical education activities. Support of Cardiff University intercalated and SSC students.
  • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.
  • Conduction suitable duties in case of emergencies and major incidents.
  • The post holder will participate in an out of hours consultant rota, detailed within their job plan.
  • With colleagues enable senior input into patients journey through the ED enhancing quality and “consultant sign off”
  • Participate in an annualised hours rota which covers the adult and paediatric emergency department rota.
  • To support the clinical lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the division management team.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in other divisions across the UHB
