An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Clinical Network Services Division, as a 10 PA Locum Clinical Oncology Consultant for 12 months working among a multi-disciplinary team to offer specialist medical input for patients within the lung disease group.

The post-holder will work alongside the current Lung Clinical Oncology Team and it is envisaged that the post holder will have clinical commitments in Lung oncology and be actively involved in this disease group, further developing the group’s interests by participating in clinical and research activity.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience. They will be an excellent oral and written communicator and they will use their well-developed clinical and professional leadership skills to encourage and promote best outcomes for patients, their relatives, and their careers.

Excellent interpersonal skills are paramount for this post together with confidence to engage and work with a range of colleagues at all levels and from all professional groups.

The successful applicant will share the management of new Lung patients with colleagues. Referrals are divided equitably via a shared pooling system. The successful applicant will have office accommodation provided within the clinical oncology department and secretarial/PA support.

The role will be responsible for working with consultant colleagues to support all aspects of the clinical oncology Lung oncology service, provide cross cover for leave. Responsibilities will include (but not confined to) new patient and follow-up clinics, actively contributing to the weekly neuro-oncology MDT, radiotherapy treatment planning which may include Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR), the delivery and monitoring of systemic therapies.

Also the post holder will support the clinical trials clinic and clinical trial activity, working with colleagues in the supervision and delivery of undergraduate and post-graduate education, contributing to service development including audit and protocol development ensuring guidance is adhered to where applicable.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services.

We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

ORGANISATIONAL ARRANGEMENTS

This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week on a 12-month fixed term contract within the Clinical Oncology Disease Group

Role Purpose

This post is covering Increase in activity in the lung Clinical Oncology team.

It is expected that the post-holder will have clinical commitments in Lung oncology, being actively involved in this disease groups.
The outpatient clinics will be held at The Christie main site along with Royal Oldham Hospital (Northern Care Alliance) and North Manchester General hospital (Manchester Foundation Trust). This is subject to change.

The appointee will be a member of the NE sector MDT. As such clinics are expected to include the Christie, the Royal Oldham Hospital (Northern Care Alliance) and North Manchester General hospital (Manchester Foundation Trust).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The appointee will be expected to develop a significant interest in Lung oncology delivering radiotherapy including SABR, and possibly systemic therapy.

The post holder will be one of 9 Clinical Oncology consultants specialising in lung cancer and will be an active member of the MDT.

The post holder will be actively involved in delivering all aspects of radiotherapy including SABR. The post may also deliver systemic therapy for NSCLC. The well supported team structure and ethos facilitates cross-cover of clinical work. Training/mentorship can be provided if required.

There is currently collaborative working within both the lung medical and clinical oncology research teams which the successful applicant will be expected to participate in.

There are opportunities for involvement in technical radiotherapy including SABR, protons and MR Linac. The team has a strong commitment to research and trial activity in which the appointee would be expected to be involved.

The post holder is expected to take on leadership, training and management roles (for example metastatic cord compression clinical lead).

The post holder is expected to help contribute to the development of a rapid palliative radiotherapy service in conjunction with an advanced practitioner.

The expectation is that new patient numbers will be up to 280 per year.

The appointee will have office accommodation and access to secretarial support.

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The Christie Hospital offers a mentoring scheme for all new consultants on appointment.
