The Immunology laboratory provides services to NUH, University Hospital Leicester, Kings Mill Hospital and Derby Hospitals. It has an extensive repertoire of tests, with a large autoimmune section to support the superregional vasculitis clinical service.
The department also has a large allergy and immunodeficiency service.
The department provides a unique opportunity to experience a very large repertoire of Immunology investigations with a variety of techniques using some of the latest equipment. This includes DxFlex and Aquios flow cytometers, DS2 ELISA processors, 2 Bioflash chemiluminescent instruments, 2 Unicap 250s, Quantalyser 3000 IIF processor and Euroblotone blot processor.You will join a hardworking, friendly and enthusiastic team.
The post holders’ main role isto manage the daily organisation of the work of a section or sub-section of the department to include daily supervision of state registered, trainee biomedical scientists and support staff. This may be on a rotational basis with other post holders.
The post holder will carry out the specialised examination of samples using various technologies and to report or present the results as appropriate.
The department has two Clinical Scientists and there will be a requirement to work alongside them on quality work and also development and introduction of new platforms and methods.

Under the direction of the Deputy Service Manager and senior laboratory staff, to:- Rotate with other Higher Specialist staff as required to maintain the operational effectiveness of the department.
- Ensure the provision of departmental services in conjunction with the Department Management Team,
- Supervise and participate in the examination of clinical specimens in accordance with laboratory policies including interpretation of results, in an efficient, effective and safe manner.
- Ensure appropriate records and documentation of specimens examined are maintained and ensure laboratory reports are accurate and timely
- Supervise and where appropriate, perform the operation of departmental equipment including calibration, control and routine maintenance. To resolve immediate analytical problems and perform repairs to instrumentation where appropriate, and liase with manufacturers where repairs cannot be completed in house
- Perform the more complex analytical work of the assigned section.
- Maintain expertise and awareness of current technological and scientific developments in relevant aspects of the discipline.
- Assist in the strategic development of departmental services.
- Deliver the training of other staff in accordance with agreed departmental and directorate standards, to include the correct use of instrumentation and equipment and the performance of analytical procedures.
- Produce, implement and maintain Standard Operating Procedures as required.
- Participation in recruitment and selection process for the department.
- Monitor internal and external quality control results, taking appropriate action to identify and correct problems. To report problems to senior staff as appropriate.
- Assist with, and where appropriate be responsible for, policies and procedures to ensure that the department meets departmental quality objectives towards accreditation standards.
- Ensure adequate levels of consumable supplies and other items required by the section are maintained using the appropriate procedure.
- Develop, evaluate and implement new equipment and procedures within the department.
- Maintain a Professional Portfolio and an up to date Professional Development Plan. Undertake courses and other activities to satisfy HCPC Continuing Professional Development requirements. Participate and promote the maintenance of continual professional education and competence of other staff.
- Report to and advise the departmental management on the ability, aptitude and performance of other staff through assessment of competence and participation in the Trust IPM programme.
- Assist in the production and maintenance of financial and statistical reports as required.
- Ensure that personal work activity is managed to make effective use of time and equipment.
- Handle the informal stages of disciplinary and grievance procedures and maintain discipline in association with the laboratory management team.
- Work flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as required.
- Participate in Joint Annual Personal Development Review with line Managers.
