To carry out Engineering Maintenance work on all Electrical services, systems, plant and equipment (planned and breakdown) in addition to Electrical installation works in accordance with the current regulations.

The Estates team pride themselves on being able to tackle any job to keep clinical services operational. We do this with continued development through training and mentoring in the varied systems we are responsible for.

Main duties of the job

This role requires a time served electrical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent. This is an entry level trade position into hospital engineering where successful candidates would take part in additional training to enable them to carry out varying maintenance tasks in all electrical hospital engineering disciplines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Carry out planned and reactive work appropriate to core skills in addition to other duties (dependent on relevant training) in order to achieve flexibility and efficiency.
  • Diagnose and repair faults on complex electrical and mechanical installations, plant, engineering systems and equipment in accordance with current regulations and guidance.
  • Work on a wide range of hospital electrical systems including (but not limited to) electrical installations, emergency generators, control systems, electrical motors/drive systems, nurse call systems, domestic equipment, fire alarms, catering equipment, heating systems, lighting systems, ventilation plant, boiler plant, building energy management system and communication systems.
  • Manufacture, assemble, erect and install new installation work unsupervised to a recognised standard within an acceptable timescale.
  • Perform a wide range of work of other trades.
  • Carry out repairs, maintain and efficiently run engineering plant and equipment.
  • Use all relevant test equipment, tools and equipment.
  • To interpret and work from complex engineering drawings and wiring diagrams, and specifications with appropriate methods and sequence of operation.
  • To plan and manage the working day based on work orders issued by supervisor.
  • To carry out work in accordance with health and safety requirements, Trust policies, procedures and regulations.
  • To work flexibly and form part of an on-call rota.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven electrical technical ability
  • Sound proven knowledge of trade principles and practice
  • Demonstrable Experience of reading and implementing engineering drawings
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of other building services and trades
  • Willingness to work towards Specialist Grade with relevant training.
  • Proven Working knowledge of computerised building management system

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • City & Guilds Electrical Craft certificate or equivalent
  • City & Guilds 18th Edition BS 7671:2008 Electrical Regulations
Desirable criteria
  • C&G Electrical Inspection and testing of installations
  • Electronics BTEC Relevant Health & Safety qualification or equivalent

APTITUDE & ABILITIES

Essential criteria
  • Fault diagnosis and repairs on complex systems. Producing and receiving electronic and written information and the ability to convey test results and fault-finding criteria to the relevant department.
  • Good communication skills at all levels, across all disciplines together with tact and diplomacy.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven working knowledge of AutoCAD
