The Integrated Community Paediatric Service (ICPS) is looking for enthusiastic, flexible and motivated Healthcare Support Worker's (HCSW) to support the Children's Care Package Service. Candidates must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate empathetic sensitive and compassionate approach to all children, young people families and carers.

The Care Package Service supports children and young people with complex health needs and their families across all community settings- home, school and social activities. There may be times when this support is also required within the hospital or hospice setting.

Care is delivered as commissioned by the Integrated Care Board throughout a 24 hour period, 7 days a week.

Upon appointment, a 6 week induction period will be offered, with training and competence assessments to prepare staff for this role. Upon completion of induction period and training, HCSW's will expected to work with children and young people as part of a team as well as autonomously as a lone workers, indirectly supervised by registered nurses, following care plans and trust policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

Work in partnership with the family, professionals and other agencies in providing holistic care for the child. Follow individualised plan of care provided by a registered children’s nurse to children with complex and continuing health care needs, some of which may be life limiting.

To undertake training and competency based assessment of clinical skills to enable the delivery care to children with complex health needs including: mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy care, airway management, oxygen therapy, suctioning, gastrostomy feeding and medication administration.

The development of these competencies and skills will be supported by the services training team. Administer prescribed medication working within Bolton FT medicines management policy.

Provide personal care, continence management and assistance with mobility on an individual basis, ensuring at all times infection control and safe moving and handling practices are adhered to.

Act autonomously within clinical competencies, with the ability to respond to the immediate needs of the child and escalate any concerns to registered nursing staff and parents.

Communicate effectively with the Team Leader and Children’s Community Nurses to ensure the needs of the child are maintained and that families are directly involved in the decision-making processes.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ-Level 3 or equivalent in health and social care or education
  • GCSE Maths and English or equivalent

  • Evidence of further study in health and social care

Experience

  • Evidence of working in a health or child care setting
