Main duties of the job

Your Role at a Glance

As the Principal Medical Physicist, you will:

  • Lead with Vision: Drive the development of our Medical Physics service, collaborating with the Consultant Clinical Scientist and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure Excellence: Oversee compliance with radiation safety regulations, providing expert advice on radiation protection matters.
  • Collaborate for Impact: Work hand-in-hand with Clinical Radiology to optimise the use of specialist diagnostic imaging equipment across main and community sites.
  • Build a Stronger Team: Take a key role in shaping a skilled and cohesive medical physics team, appointing critical roles and nurturing professional support networks.

About You:

  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist is essential.

Person specification

Registrations and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Clinical Scientist, registered with the HCPC
  • Masters degree in Medical Physics
  • Honours degree in physics or related science
  • Awarded - 2nd class or higher
  • in Medical Physics or related science
  • Certified as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in Diagnostic Radiology under IR(ME)R-2017 – or eligible to apply within 1 year
  • Certified as a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) under RPA2000 – or eligible to apply within 1 year

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience in Diagnostic Radiology physics and radiation protection
  • Working at a senior level in team and service management

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Effective planning and organisational skills with a track record in delivering service plans and developments.
  • Completing risk assessments and managing action plans to mitigate against these risks.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and regulations including IRR and IRMER.
