Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

Job overview
The Children’s Allergy Service is seeking a part time 0.8 wte clinical fellow in Paediatric Allergy to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team as a fixed term position for 12 months from Sept 2024 to Sept 2025. This post can be used by trainees as an Out of Programme Training post to use towards Allergy SPIN or Out of Programme Experience to gather experience prior to applying for Paediatric Allergy Subspeciality Training (GRID).It is also suitable for doctors post CCT who are wanting more experience in clinical paediatric allergy and it is suitable for all doctors as a standalone fellow post (subject to fulfilling the criteria to practice in the UK).
The department was founded in 2006 and has grown rapidly since and is now the largest of its kind in the UK. We are currently involved in many exciting initiatives and are looking for an individual with appropriate skills to complement this team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to take an operational role as Education Fellow in managing the Allergy Academy for 1 day per week. The Allergy Academy is the department’s post-graduate teaching institute. The role involves interfacing between a wide range of clinical health professionals, opinion leaders, academic institutions and logistic experts.The emphasis of this role is on clinical and educational innovation, to enable quality improvement within both fields. An able candidate may wish to consider applying for a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy as a post-graduate teaching qualification.

The post holder will also spend 3 days a week as a Clinical Fellow covering 3 general paediatric allergy outpatient clinics per week (new and follow up patients) and they will have involvement with the patient query rota jobs (prescribing drugs for day care challenges, patient queries, ward queries, day case reactions / queries and in triaging referrals).The successful candidate will have a clinical and educational supervisor from the consultant team.

Children’s Allergy Service
Until 2006, the Allergy Department saw a small number of children, supported by 2 honorary consultant Paediatricians. In 2006, in response to demands on the service and the new opportunities with the development of children’s services, a department of Paediatric Allergy was formed.The new Children’s Allergy Service is an integrated clinical and academic unit led by Professor Gideon Lack. The current team of Consultant Paediatric Allergists in the department comprises Prof Gideon Lack, Prof Adam Fox, Prof George du Toit, Prof Helen Brough, Dr Susan Chan, Dr Kate Swan, Prof Alexandra Santos, Dr Tom Marrs, Dr Elizabeth Powell and Dr Ru-Xin Foong.
The department is a National Sub-speciality training centre for trainees in Paediatric Allergy. In 2007 the service was chosen for inspection by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee as an example of high quality specialist care.The Children’s Allergy Service can be broadly divided into clinical and academic components although every effort has been made to ensure that the two elements of the service closely interlink.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post-holder will be accountable to Group Lead for Children’s Allergy, Gastroenterology, Palliative Care and Respiratory, Dr Helen Brough as well as the Director of the Allergy Academy, Dr Tom Marrs.

Clinical:
The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of Paediatric Allergy services to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to include:
(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
Provide High Quality Care to Patients- The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice
- To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
- Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research portfolio and seek to embed translational research into clinical practice, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
- To provide and support high quality teaching to medical post-graduate clinicians and multidisciplinary health care professionals as required by the Clinical Director and Academy Director.
- To develop and coordinate innovative teaching study activities by liaising between multiple stakeholders and service provider agencies partnered in the Academy Programme.
Clinical Governance:
All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their annual appraisal.
