Eye Casualty is an exciting, busy department which manages the care of eye patients needing urgent assessment, diagnosis and treatment. We also have elective laser activity and a Rapid Access clinic. As part of planned improvements, we are increasing the number of our Band 5 staff nurses.

The successful candidates will be able to access a specialist development programme, with mentoring and educational support, that may lead, when the opportunity arises, to training as a Nurse Practitioner. This a great opportunity to join an ever-expanding specialty.

The post holder will be required to work various shifts to support the needs of the service. This includes working weekdays, weekends, bank holiday days and varying hours with the earliest start time at 7:00am and latest finish time of 10:00pm.

Main duties of the job

As an Eye Casualty Staff Nurse you will be responsible for patient care in Eye Casualty and Laser Suite. This will also involve coordinating the department, problem-solving, planning and implementing patient care and ensuring colleagues adhere to Trust policies and guidelines.

If you have achieved the ophthalmic programme training, you will be expected to use this in the course of managing and triaging your patients.

You may have the opportunity to further expand your skills within the Band 5 role by learning the use of slit lamp and Goldmann's applanation tonometer, use of Log mar, assisting medical practitioner in the treatment of eye emergency such as suturing, intravitreal injections.

Eye Casualty is currently open from 07:00 until 22:00 hours and 7 days a week so any applicants must be able to work flexibly for those hours and on any of those days. It is a busy but very interesting and specialised area to work in.

You will need to demonstrate the ability to be adaptable and be able to work flexibly in diverse clinical environments maintaining clinical experience as required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Registered Nurse to join the Eye Casualty and Laser Suite at QMC.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

HWB 2 Be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the

HWB6 Development of programmes of care ensuring that these are evaluated and amended as appropriate.

Core 1 Document the condition and progress of patients and report to medical staff and/or senior nursing staff any areas of concern.

HWB 5 Undertake nursing procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines, including intravenous cannulation, venepuncture and the administration of intravenous medications, intravenous fluorescein angiography and including specific procedures relevant to patients attending Eye Outpatients.

Core 2 Demonstrate clinical procedures to registered and unregistered staff as required.

HWB6 Once competent in team management skills, take charge of the clinical area on a regular basis in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her deputy.

All Participate in the support and implementation of Essence of Care guidelines

HWB 5 Be aware of your role with regard to the Medicines Code of Practice.

Core 3 Comply with all Trust policies with particular regard to the policies and procedure carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.

Core 5 Liaise with other clinical areas providing appropriate policies, education and clinical expertise in order to facilitate the management of patients with special requirements.

HWB 5 Maintain an awareness of the developments in the care and treatment of patients in order to be able to carry out duties competently and efficiently

Communication

Core 1 Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team in order to promote efficient patient care and maintain effective channels of communication.

Core 1 Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the area and complete an incident form in accordance with Trust policy.

Core 1 Maintain accurate patient records including the use of the Trusts electronic patient records system PAS.

Core 1 Communicate with and provide support for patients’ relatives, carers and visitors.

Core 1 Be aware of the need for confidentiality both within the written and spoken word, and electronic records, and ensure correct storage of and access to patients’ records at all times.

Core 1 Liaise with other clinical areas as necessary for the coordination of patient care and the smooth running of the ward/unit/department.

Core 6 Actively support equality and value diversity.

Managerial

Core 2 Support a culture of teamwork within the clinical area

Core 2 Collaborate with all members of the clinical area to ensure efficient running of the ward/unit/department.

Use resources effectively in order to provide quality patient care whilst having an awareness of budgetary issues.

Core 2 Assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in introducing new members of staff to their duties.

Core 3 Supervise registered and unregistered staff as appropriate.

Core 3 Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe keeping of patients’ property in accordance with Trust policy.

Core 2 Ensure where appropriate that the programmes of training for learners, both student nurses and nursing auxiliaries/health care assistants are completed.

Core 2 Undertake formal and informal teaching sessions as required and undertake training to act as a mentor to students.

Following appropriate training, carry the directorate/floor bleep.

Contribute to the monitoring and control of expenditure and use of resources.

Core 4 Contribute to the improvement of services where appropriate

General

Training and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Must have NMC Registration
  • Diploma or degree in health/nursing related studies
  • Continuing professional development and reflective profile
Desirable criteria
  • Have or willing to undertake a suitable Teaching and Assessing Qualification
  • Ophthalmic Nursing Qualification e.g ENB 346 Possession of a Mentoring Course
  • Completion of Basic or Advanced Life Support - Adult and Paediatric
  • Completion of Ophthalmology role development or skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current or Recent ophthalmic nursing experience or courses
  • Supervision of non registered staff and students
Desirable criteria
  • Assessment and treatment of eye emergencies

Communication and Relationship

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate Basic IT skills
  • Recognition of own level of competence and limitations and able to communicate these to appropriate staff

  • Demonstrate computer literacy and use of IT skills e.g. Emails, Excel, Powerpoint and Word
  • Demonstrate evidence of providing formal teaching sessions
