Are you the type of person who likes a fast-paced environment and likes to be challenged?

If so, come and join EDF as a Radiation Protection Engineer!

The Opportunity

As a Radiation Protection Engineer, you’ll support NNB’s oversight and advisory functions for managing work with ionising radiation at the Hinkley Point C construction site. You’ll oversee radiological safety standards by conducting task observations, developing and reviewing radiation risk assessments, local rules, and contingency plans, and providing expert advice to ensure safe and compliant operations.

Working closely with the Radiography Co-ordinator and Radiation Protection Technicians, you’ll facilitate radiography activities and radioactive source management across the site. In this role, you’ll monitor ongoing radiological performance and contribute to future planning by anticipating risks and implementing proactive safety measures.

You’ll ensure compliance with relevant legislation and standards while collaborating with the wider HPC Delivery team to represent the Principal Contractor with a strong focus on safe and efficient project execution.

Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a salary from £62,000 and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed.

That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be responsible for managing radiological safety performance across the HPC site, ensuring effective monitoring and reporting while collaborating with internal functions and contractors to drive safety and compliance. You’ll play a key role in planning and prioritising work, adapting to the site’s evolving needs, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement focused on safety, quality, time, and cost.

You’ll engage with external regulators and senior HPC stakeholders, including the Pre-Operations team responsible for delivering the future operating power station’s organisation, systems, and processes.

You’ll also work towards obtaining or maintaining an RPA certificate of competence and use your expertise to implement pragmatic solutions that align with both regulatory requirements and business objectives.

Who you are

Being a Radiation Protection Engineer at HPC means applying strong technical knowledge of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) and radioactive source management to ensure safe and compliant operations on-site. You’ll be responsible for developing and implementing radiation protection arrangements, including risk assessments, local rules, contingency plans, dosimetry, and source handling procedures.

You’ll use human factors to reduce risks, deliver briefings and training, and provide expert advice to a range of stakeholders. Strong planning and interpersonal skills are essential, along with a practical, methodical approach to tasks. You’ll be comfortable working on-site with various construction teams and using IT systems to support your work.

Experience with shielding calculations and familiarity with Nuclear Site Licensee Management arrangements and CDM Regulations are essential.

We’re looking for someone with a science-related degree (or equivalent) and practical experience in radiological protection in a dynamic nuclear environment. You’ll have a good understanding of industrial radiography principles and experience interacting with nuclear and environmental regulators.

Holding or previously holding an RPA certificate of competence would be advantageous.

If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!

Closing date for applications: 19th January 2025

Success is personal. It’s your journey, powered by us. Join us and we’ll help Britain achieve Net Zero, together.
