Job overview
The post holder will undertake a 27 month training programme as a Healthcare Science Level 4 Apprentice within the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT). It is also an exciting opportunity to work in the new Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC's) Spoke and Hub in the heart of the Halifax and Huddersfield communities.
Formal training will be given where the successful candidate can learn and develop skills and knowledge relating to working in a busy cardio-respiratory department and by undertaking basic cardiology and respiratory diagnostic tests. Study will take place in partnership with the Sheffield College.
This is a full-time post and there is an expectation that the apprentice will need to commit to self-directed study, attend Sheffield college virtually and in person, and successfully complete the training programme within the contract period.The post holder will receive 20% off the job training to fulfil the apprenticeship standard.
On successful completion of the apprenticeship and probationary period the post holder will be offered a permanent post of Cardio-Respiratory Healthcare Science Associate (Band 4).
Main duties of the job
As an apprentice all tasks will be under direct supervision until competency through formal assessment is achieved and will include the following main duties within the cardiorespiratory department:
- To perform routine and urgent electrocardiograms.
- To perform routine and urgent spirometry and routine lung function tests.
- To record, interpret, and report ECGs, spirometry, and pulse oximetry.
- To perform and measure automatic and manual blood pressure measurements.
- To set up and fit a cardiac monitor, 24-hour ambulatory ECG monitor, and a 24hr ambulatory blood pressure monitor.
- To fit cardiac device monitors and produce a report.
- To carry out and perform venepuncture on patients when required.
- To comply and complete all requirements of the apprenticeship programme.

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING
Essential criteria- 5 GCSE’s 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent academic qualifications, must include Maths, English, and Science
- A willingness to undertake any training or development associated with the role
- To be committed to completing the Level 4 apprenticeship within 27 months
- To comply with all training requirements of the Level 4 apprenticeship and complete practical competencies
- To be trained in Basic Life Support
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

You may be required to undertake a DBS. The Trust will administer the DBS check on your behalf and will recover the cost (Enhanced £54.40, Standard £26.40 or Basic £26.40) from your salary when you commence in post (including Internal staff).You will also be required to participate in the DBS Update Service and pay the £16 cost per year. This is a condition of your employment.
