Job overview

Are you an experienced Band 5 staff nurse looking for a new direction in your career? Are you interested in ophthalmology? Wycombe Hospital dedicated Ophthalmology Out Patients Department which complement our existing service across five sites.

We are currently seeking highly motivated, dynamic staff nurses who have an interest in ophthalmology to join our nursing team – no previous ophthalmology experience is necessary.

The role will include working alongside the ophthalmic nurse practitioners in the Ophthalmic casualty, looking after ophthalmology patients and some rotation to the ophthalmology outpatient department cross site may be required. You will be expected to deliver safe, high quality, compassionate care to our patients and assist the senior nursing team in providing innovative changes in service delivery.

Main duties of the job
  1. Acts at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct, and within the principles of the scope of Professional Practice and ensures other members of the team also work within these
  2. Maintain professional working relationships with all members of the ophthalmology team and effectively contribute to the team’s continual development
  3. Undertakes the nursing assessment of the patient in the Urgent Booked Ophthalmic Clinic. Carry out imaging request on patient as requested by clinicians. Undertakes pre-operative assessment on patient across all subspecialities.
  4. Devise a plan of nursing care based in the nursing assessment, taking into account the medical prescription in the Urgent Booked Ophthalmic Clinic.
  5. Ensures planned nursing care is delivered safely and effectively taking into account the views of the patient and their relatives. Advise on health promotion and the prevention of illness.
  6. Manage clinics in the Out patients department, ensuring the smooth running of clinics, maintain stock levels and communicating with members of the MDT.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good general education
  • Registered Nurse/Awaiting NMC PIN
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of further continued professional development
  • Post qualification experience in relevant speciality

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to understand the role of a registered nurse
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Awareness of current professional nursing issues
  • Demonstrates understanding of the importance of audit/quality
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration experience working in an acute hospital setting

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills: written and verbal in English
  • Competency in IV drug administration. Cannulation. Infusion pump skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritise own caseload with supervision
  • Ability to solve problems and use initiative
  • Ability to develop clinical skills
  • Willingness to undergo training (e.g. medications
  • Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of care planning, preceptorship, reflection and clinical supervision
  • good time mangement
  • Awareness of the NHSE guidance of clinical governance in order to continuously improve quality of care e.g. quality, safety and ward audit standards
