The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) are looking to recruit x3 wte Consultant Geriatrician's to join our existing Department for Medicine of the Elderly (DME) team as we look to build on our recent expansion and successes - part time applications will be considered to enable us to get up to our required establishment.

The organisation was formed on 1st July 2018 to bring together our five Hospitals in Derby, Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth to provide the highest quality care to patients across southern Derbyshire and south east Staffordshire.

The post holders’ base will either be at Royal Derby Hospital, at Queen's Hospital Burton or could be a combination of the two.

DME at UHDB has developed and expanded considerably over the past 5 years. At the Royal Derby Hospital site there are 16 Consultants and 4 Acute Inpatient Geriatric Wards and at Queen’s Hospital, Burton we have 3 Consultants and 2 Acute Inpatient Geriatric Wards.

The Derby based Parkinson's Team was awarded a National Parkinson Foundation Centre of Excellence status by the NPF in 2011 and following four yearly reviews is accredited until 2026 and is one of only two such centres in the UK. Our nationally recognized multidisciplinary movement disorder clinic is led by Dr Skelly and we are seeking to develop the service at Burton and we have a dedicated Senior Clinical Fellow for Parkinson's Disease.

The Department’s Academic Lead is Professor Adam Gordon, current President of the British Geriatrics Society. Professor Gordon’s appointment has enhanced the varied research options within the Department and allowed us to establish a Geriatric Liaison service to provide in reach services throughout the Trust and specifically support to General Surgery and their emergency laparotomy patients in line with the NELA guidance.

The Department is looking to expand these services over the next few years.

The Burton based team provide specialist clinics in falls, fracture prevention, syncope and orthogeriatrics.

The Department has recently expanded into the community providing support to General Practice surgeries and selected care homes as part of a pilot into future community models; this work has commenced at Derby and is planned to include Burton.

The Department is active in teaching both medical students and at postgraduate level. There is also a developing research program, alongside regular audits and a developing set of KPI’s. We are enthusiastic educators and enjoy supervising our junior colleagues and helping them to achieve their goals and guiding them successfully through their specialist training.

We are looking for a candidate who can build on the success of our services and help develop them further in the future as we strive to make care for the frail older patients better than ever.
