YOUR ROLE
This Director-level role focuses on driving transformative change primarily within the rail manufacturing sector, with a secondary focus on the broader UK manufacturing sector. You will lead and mentor a high-performing team, shaping and delivering innovative consulting solutions for clients.
In this role, you will play a key role in:
- Leading and delivering complex consulting engagements focusing on operational efficiency improvements, digital transformation, and strategic planning within manufacturing companies.
- Developing and executing strategic transformation roadmaps for clients, leveraging your deep industry knowledge and understanding of industry best practices.
- Building and maintaining strong client relationships, playing a crucial role in driving revenue generation and proposal development.
- Mentoring and developing junior consultants, fostering a culture of excellence and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Growing and leading a team of consultants and potentially supporting the business development initiatives of a consulting practice.
As part of your role, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the business and your own personal growth through activities that form part of the following categories:
- Business Development – Leading/contributing to proposals, RFPs, bids, proposition development, client pitch contribution, client hosting at events.
- Internal contribution – Campaign development, internal think tanks, whitepapers, practice development (operations, recruitment, team events & activities), offering development.
- Learning & development – Training to support your career development and the skills demand within the company, certifications etc.
YOUR PROFILE
A highly accomplished and results-driven individual with substantial experience within the rail or other discrete manufacturing sectors is sought. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of the intricacies of rolling stock or signalling solutions, with demonstrable experience applying lean manufacturing principles, process improvement methodologies (like Six Sigma), and digital technologies to achieve significant operational gains. Specific experience in the following areas would be highly advantageous:
- Operational Excellence in Rail/Manufacturing: Hands-on experience within one or more key areas of rail product engineering and manufacturing, ideally including supply chain management, manufacturing execution systems (MES), quality assurance/control, automation, procurement, and sustainable design principles. Understanding of current industry best practices and regulatory compliance is crucial. Expertise in areas such as defect prevention, root cause analysis, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives is a plus.
- Project Leadership and Management: Proven ability to lead and deliver projects related to operational improvement, digital transformation, or strategic planning within high-volume discrete manufacturing environments. Experience in applying lean methodologies and Six Sigma principles – demonstrating quantifiable improvements in productivity, efficiency, and cost reduction – would be particularly valuable.
- Strategic Relationship and Communication: Exceptional client relationship management skills, particularly when engaging with senior leadership within manufacturing organisations. The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of providing pragmatic, actionable recommendations, articulating complex ideas concisely and effectively to diverse audiences, and building strong, collaborative working relationships.
- Team Leadership & Development: Demonstrated leadership experience in managing project teams and motivating high-performing individuals. Experience in mentoring and developing junior consultants, and fostering a positive team dynamic, is essential. Successfully leading cross-functional initiatives and delivering results under tight deadlines is highly desirable.
- Industry Knowledge and Technical Proficiency: A thorough grasp of manufacturing processes, supply chain dynamics, and emerging industry trends within manufacturing in general and, ideally, within the rail sector. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and other key digital technologies pivotal in modern manufacturing operations is highly valued.
- Consulting Expertise: Experience in a leading consulting firm, or possessing a strong consulting background while working within a manufacturing environment, will be beneficial. The ideal candidate should readily adapt to matrixed organisational structures, establish strong relationships with colleagues, and effectively sell and implement consulting solutions.
- Business Acumen & Sales Aptitude: Proven track record in developing impactful propositions and achieving tangible business development results. The candidate should be able to leverage existing company relationships and their own network to generate substantial consulting revenue, ideally in the range of £2 million annually for a Director role. Demonstrate capacity to do the same at the Vice President level, with a target of c. £4 million annually, would significantly strengthen the candidate's profile.
