We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed Support Worker to provide 2:1 close supervision for a 14-year-old young boy.
Main Duties We are looking to recruit a person to compliment our team of workers, to support a young boy who has a diagnosis of Autism, ADHD and a Learning Disability. The young boy is a happy child who loves animals and enjoys watching a range of cartoons including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse as well as being active.He smiles a lot, although he can be loud when he is distressed. He sensory seeks and may head bang into people when distressed. He can become distressed when he finally realises, he is hungry, thirsty or cold but may not realise this and refuse food and drink until he is very hungry or thirsty.
Waiting can cause him to become distressed.
He has weighted items and chew noodles to help provide feedback to keep him regulated. Changes to routine can distress him. His favourite activities are visiting places like Plessey Woods, soft play, beaches and walks where he can feed the ducks.He has a National Trust card, Alan Shearer centre membership, Aln Valley railway card and Beamish Museum membership. He also likes going out in his chair, likes messy play but usually wants his hands cleaned fairly quickly after this activity.
He also enjoys trips to McDonalds, going into shops to buy one item, which is often a packet of noodles or sweets.
He does not enjoy venues or locations which are too noisy and busy as he can become overwhelmed and anxious, he needs patient and sensitive support and especially when visiting anywhere that is not familiar to him. He will need support with making his needs known, and usually prefers to communicate by leading a person by the hand to what he wants and also constant supervision due to having no danger awareness.He has some single words and short phrases but he can over generalise with his short phrases.
For example he may say, ‘Momma I wanna go home,’ which is from the Aristocats movie, but this phrase often just means he wants to go somewhere and not specifically home.
It is hoped that his support worker will take a person-centred approach to help promote some independence and basic life skills, including support with social interactions with others as well as support with travel training so he can use the bus and in time, a metro or train.
Support will also be required with all personal care, he is able to go to the toilet but needs prompts and support to clean himself and wash his hands. He rarely uses the toilet while he is out in the community.
Hours 4 hours per week term time, 5 hours per week shorter school holidays and 10 hours per a week during the summer and Easter school holidays. The post will initially be to work 5 hours per a week summer school holidays and where possible to cover the annual leave of the other support workers.
Rate of pay £13.09 per hour. Holidays are 5.6 weeks per year pro-rata. Out of pocket expenses will be met by the employer.

- be punctual and reliable as the child cannot be left unsupervised
- be flexible
- have a happy, positive and caring nature

An Enhanced DBS check is required – cost to be met by employer.
