Paediatric Sister/Charge Nurse - Emergency Department
Completing breach analysis during each shift.Manage staff sickness ensuring that the department has minimum safestaffing levels; escalation to Clinical Nursing Lead if appropriate cover is notmaintained.Assist in the investigation of complaints/clinical incidents as necessary.
Foster good working relationships with other paediatric wards anddepartments within the Trust. Supervise junior staff through a shift, prioritising and delegating asappropriate. Manage all resources to the maximum benefit of patients and the service,being aware of resource implications specific to the department.
Promote effective communication within the nursing team, to patients and carers, visitors, members of the multi-disciplinary team and externalagencies, receive and report sensitive information.Participate in the setting, implementing and monitoring of organisation andlocal objectives Promote, and participate in, collaborative working relationships with themulti-disciplinary team.
Act as a positive role model for other staff. Act as an advocate for patients. Utilise clinical and risk assessment skills to maintain a safe environment. ClinicalTo be competent to assess, plan, delivery and manage episodes of care,participating in all aspects of care from arrival through todischarge/admission/transfer.To be an effective practitioner and demonstrate the ability to deliver a highstandard of patient care.Organise the method of care delivery within a clinical area; prioritising, allocating and delegating effectively.
To identify and act upon situations which may be detrimental to the healthand wellbeing of patients. Liaise with other agencies and professionals to ensure effective patientmanagement and care. Support and guide junior staff in delivering high standards of nursing care.Monitor, maintain and review regularly standards of care in conjunction withother members of the multi-disciplinary and safeguarding teams. Maximise opportunities for health promotion and health education. Act as a resource person to others, providing information to junior staff,multidisciplinary team members, patients, and relatives.
Initiate and take part in clinical audit. Keep abreast of new developments in paediatric nursing, and specialtyspecific information. Be competent in appropriate areas of role expansion, and support thisdevelopment in others. Be professionally accountable for own actions during working shift.

Have effective communication skills at all levels. Early informal management of complaints with the aim of satisfactoryresolution. Ensure appropriate escalation when this is not achieved. To abide by Infection Prevention and Control policies relevant to your areaof work, and undertake the necessary level of training.
This will beappraised through the KSF review process or other relevant professionalreview process.To accept responsibility for the provision of effective prevention andcontrol within the Trust in liaison with the Trusts Infection Control Team.

Ensure compliance with all Trust policies and procedures at all times.To assist in the investigation and take corrective action relating tountoward incidents, accidents and complaints in accordance with Trustpolicies and procedures. Be aware of child protection guidelines together with strategies to safeguard vulnerable children.
Seek guidance and support form senior staffwhere necessary. Maintain awareness of current nursing practice/research with particularreference to own working area, evaluating and disseminating findings. To support and participate in departmental clinical research activities, andassist in the implementation of any appropriate research findings.
