Are you an experienced and motivated leader in medical engineering? King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Electro Medical Equipment (EME) Manager to join our expanding team.

This is a key operational leadership role within the Medical Equipment Management Service (MEMS), responsible for overseeing the delivery of medical equipment maintenance across multiple clinical specialities and Trust sites.

You’ll play a vital part in ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient management of critical medical equipment, working closely with technical teams, clinical stakeholders, and operational leads across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead the strategic and operational management of the EME workshop across all MEMS-supported sites.
  • Line manage Band 7 service leads, promoting a high-performance, supportive team culture.
  • Deliver high standards of planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs.
  • Oversee the deployment and support of medical device connectivity to the Epic electronic health record system.
  • Monitor service delivery against KPIs and drive improvement initiatives.
  • Manage service governance, ensuring compliance with ISO 13485, MHRA guidance, and Trust policies.
  • Represent the EME service at internal governance forums, clinical groups, and external meetings.
  • Support business planning, workforce development, and strategic equipment replacement programmes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Operational Performance
  • Oversee workshop performance across all supported sites, ensuring prompt and efficient service delivery.
  • Lead on medical device connectivity projects, working closely with ICT teams.
  • Manage the team’s workload, equipment audits, stock control, and asset management through the AIMS database.
  • Provide regular performance reports and analysis to internal governance bodies.
Strategy and Planning
  • Support Trust-wide medical equipment strategic planning and capital replacement programmes.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) aligned with ISO and Trust quality frameworks.
  • Support business cases, service development, and resource planning.
Governance and Quality Control
  • Lead quality assurance processes, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control, health and safety, and safeguarding procedures.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for regulatory compliance.
People Management
  • Lead, mentor, and develop direct reports.
  • Conduct appraisals, manage training compliance, and support recruitment as needed.
  • Foster a positive team culture, promoting wellbeing and professional development.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to BSc or equivalent level of education, training, or experience in a relevant scientific, technical or engineering subject.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Professional registration within healthcare science (practitioner or scientist level)
  • Master’s Degree (or equivalent level combination of post-graduate study and experience) in medical device or other healthcare related technology.
  • Formal qualification in leadership and management
  • Further training in operational and project management

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience in leading a team of Biomedical Engineers or managing a biomedical department/workshop.
  • Extensive experience in planning and delivering maintenance and repair services covering a wide range of specialist medical equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of specialist medical equipment and related techniques.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety at Work and other related legislation.
  • Knowledge of patient and staff risks associated with inappropriate use or failure of medical devices
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, professional and other guidelines
  • Broad knowledge of medical equipment management techniques such as acceptance testing, repair and service
  • Advanced level of IT knowledge.
  • Expert technical/clinical knowledge in medical device technologies
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working within the NHS environment.

Skills and Competencies

Essential criteria
  • Ability to organise own and other’s workloads.
  • Ability to lead a team of engineers working with a wide range of medical devices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to negotiate on difficult, complex and detailed issues.
  • Ability to travel between sites in a timely manner.
