Base Location: UK | We're proud to offer a Flexible First approach to work, and this role is no exception. We will, however, need your base 'home' location to be one of our SSEN offices or depots around Scotland, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness.

Salary: £55,200 - £83,000 + car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Principal Engineer - AC C&P Integration to join our Offshore Engineering - HVDC/FACTS Technical Policy Team. This specialist team plays a vital role in collaborating at all levels of HVDC & FACTS Projects within SSEN Transmission and their integration into our AC Network.

As the Principal Engineer - HVDC/FACTS AC C&P Integration, you will;
  • Write, maintain, and own technical requirement specifications, single line diagrams, protection schematics, and guidance notes for the Control & Protection (C&P) interfaces between the AC network and HVDC/FACTS Systems used on the Transmission network - responsible for integrating with existing SSEN specifications for AC and HVDC/FACTS.
  • Review existing SSEN requirement specifications and assist in updating them based on lessons learnt from projects and new technology applications.
  • As part of the Technical Authority, review test plans and witness tests to ensure that AC Control & Protection (C&P) technology and equipment selected is adequately tested, proven, validated, and review proposed suppliers to confirm their suitability to be approved for use on the transmission network.
  • Provide Subject Matter Expert input to design reviews carried out by the Design Authority, provide specialist input where required and verify project proposals are fit for purpose and identify any scope changes required.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to the transmission business for C&P interfaces to HVDC/FACTS regarding refurbishments, improvements, or fault investigations of failed plant.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline and Chartered Engineer status with a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.
  • Demonstrable experience at an expert level in the design, specification, construction, control & operation, and maintenance of AC C&P Systems at transmission voltages.
  • The ability and experience to technically assess issues and/or problems and critically assess a range of technical solutions and an in depth understanding of the technical requirements for development, design, planning, control, integration, and operation of HVDC Systems.
  • Understanding of the interfaces between AC Networks and HVDC/FACTS Systems and applying these.
  • Knowledge and understanding of a range of British and European Standards, UK grid code and SQSS alongside the capability and experience in writing technical requirement specifications, guidance notes and work instructions for all AC Control & Protection aspects.
