Job overview

This is a 3 month fixed term post for a Locum Consultant Radiologist with a sub-specialist interest in musculoskeletal imaging.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will undertake musculoskeletal cross-sectional and plain film reporting, intervention and ultrasound lists. There will also be a requirement to cover acute CT and MR reporting.

The weekly sessional arrangements are usually agreed following discussion. There is no on call associated with this post.

The post holder will join the team of 30 Radiologists to provide care to this growing population of patients, and raise departmental profiles through teaching and education. Work is based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital with satellite cover provided at West Berkshire Community Hospital and Bracknell Healthspace

Working for our organisation

Our department has Insignia PACS, Cerner millennium RIS and Soliton voice recognition software. We are well equipped with Philips 1.5 and 3T static MRI scanners in addition to a mobile Philips 1.5 Integra scanner based at the West Berkshire Community Hospital (WBCH) in Thatcham.
Scanners. The CT department is equipped with 4 new CT scanners, 3 x Aquillion Prime and a Aquillion Prism. A second static Aquillion Prime is installed at WBCH. Our ultrasound suite has 8 Hitatchi Ascendus machines and a Phillips Epiq 7 for vascular and interventional use.
We also have two interventional rooms, a fluoroscopy suite, a breast screening centre, a dedicated radiology nursing unit and a nuclear medicine department. We are planning to expand our MRI capacity with the addition of two new scanners to be based at WBCH.

In addition, we currently have use of a commercial mobile MRI scanner located at Bracknell Healthspace. We have recently acquired onsite PET CT, provided by a commercial supplier and operated out of the Berkshire Cancer Centre.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Immediate Responsibilities of the Appointee

The post holder will undertake musculoskeletal cross-sectional and plain film reporting, intervention and ultrasound lists. There will also be a requirement to cover acute CT and MR reporting.

The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the Radiology service with the present consultants. An office base with secretarial and administrative support will be provided.

Clinical Objectives
  1. To provide, with colleagues, Radiology services in both in-patient and out-patient settings.
  2. To provide subspecialist knowledge and skills regarding musculoskeletal radiology
  3. Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  4. Comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor at all times.
Management responsibilities
  1. Active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.
  2. Participation and involvement in meetings and other business in the Radiology department

Teaching, Research & Audit

The Radiology department has recently been awarded the status of University Department of Radiology which reflects our excellent governance structures, teaching and training activities, our broad and diverse research portfolio and excellent track record in staff development.

This has ratified our close links with the University of Reading and we are looking forward to future developments in this collaboration.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Trust Radiology department received the highest level (‘Excellent’) status from the Oxford Deanery annual school reports in 2015, 2016 and 2017. We run weekly teaching for our trainees and our Intervention and MSK rotations are particularly popular.

We have a robust programme of audit and Clinical Governance with monthly meetings in Radiology. Findings from audit and Clinical Governance are regularly fed into the educational meetings and communicated widely amongst the staff.

We work closely with other departments and Reading University and are actively involved in a number of local and national research projects. The Trust has an excellent reputation for education, as measured by its PMETB report and regular responses from trainees and medical students.

It has a recently upgraded medical library and an active clinical librarian service, a clinical skills unit and a state of the art simulation centre opened in 2009.

Continuing Professional Development

The appointee will be expected to participate in personal appraisals annually and will also be expected to take part in a CPD program. The responsible officer for the post is currently the Medical Director and there is a revalidation officer to provide administrative support and advice for medical staff maintaining their credentials for revalidation.

Provisional Job Plan

This is a full time post with 10 Programmed activities. The balance between Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities will be agreed with the post holder in the final job plan. The SPA allocation is 1.5 for personal CME, audit and revalidation requirements including departmental meetings.

Additional SPAs may be allocated for specific agreed objectives for the Trust, subject to the agreement of the Clinical Lead.

Expected minimum reporting numbers within the department are:

16 cases per 4 hour CT session, 16 cases per 4 hour MRI session, 10-12 cases per ultrasound session and 100 plain films per reporting session

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration
  • FRCR (UK) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree e.g. MD/MSc submitted/awarded

Clinical Experience & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Takes responsibility for clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice
  • Extensive experience working within MSK Radiology
  • Ability to report all general and MSK examinations

Audit Management & IT

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines.
  • Undertake audits and present data as required.
  • Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce
  • Evidence of experience in service development and protocol writing - particularly in regard to PET-CT and oncology imaging.

Research. Teaching skill & exp

Essential criteria
  • Track record of publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Evidence of providing good teaching and supervision to medical students
