Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a compassionate leader, we are looking to appoint an Executive Chief Nurse to join the Board in a radically changing and evolving NHS landscape. Our Chief Nurse will have a key role in formulating the Trust’s new long-term strategy with the current strategy 2020-2025 in its final year.

The focus will be on delivering against the Chief Nurse portfolio in the context of being part of wave one of the Government’s New Hospital Programme. The right candidate will contribute to the development of a renewed Trust Strategy reflecting the needs of a diverse population.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be an innovative, inspiring and compassionate nurse leader who can create a compelling and inclusive vision that engages the across the professions. You will have highly effective communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with a wide range of colleagues within and external to the organisation.

You will maintain high professional standards and the delivery of safe and compassionate care to patients and their families will be fundamental to your role.

You will lead on the effective implementation of the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional Strategy that is currently being developed, creating an ambitious vision for the professions driving innovations in healthcare, ensuring evidence based care is embedded in clinical practice.

You will embody the values of the organisation in your approach.

Patient safety is a key part of the Chief Nurse role and you will work in collaboration with Executive Director colleagues to ensure that there is a just and learning culture, continuous improvement is a priority and that the creation of a psychologically safe working environment is of the upmost priority.

You will lead on the delivery of the quality priorities set out in the Trust Quality and Safety Strategy and ensure delivery against key quality metrics. You will be the Executive Maternity Safety Champion and Director of Infection Prevention and Control.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with current unblemished NMC registration
  • Masters level degree or equivalent level of experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A proven track record of Nursing, Midwifery/Deputy Director/Associate Director leadership underpinned by an understanding of the NHS and its relationships
  • High level of managerial competency with the ability to lead and manage change in a complex and dynamic environment.
  • Evidence of significant experience in leading and influencing professional groups to secure cross-system change.
  • Evidence of significant experience in building effective networks across health and social care Experience of leading improvement programmes.
  • Experience in establishing a clear strategic vision and direction, and translating this into successful outcomes for staff and patients.
  • Experience of development models of care to support people to remain healthy and well and to support care in a non-hospital setting.
  • Experience of improvement patient safety and creating a culture of learning and improvement.
  • Experience of supporting Nurses, Midwives and AHP concerns about conduct or capability.
  • Demonstrable experience and commitment to Inclusion

Knowledge/Skills/attitudes

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of NHS strategy and policy and its impact at system and organisation level.
  • Strong financial awareness and business acumen drawn from experience of leading operations in multi-million pound environments
  • Knowledge and experience of the requirements of as well as working collaboratively with regulatory bodies including the RCN, NHS England and CQC
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in particular communication, negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to inspire and motivate individuals and teams and gain consensus in a challenging environment
  • The ability to assimilate complex information and make decisions in a fast moving environment, cope with ambiguity and sustain performance
  • The ability to drive improvement forward, maintain momentum and sustain a medium to long-term view against the day to day operational and financial challenges.
  • A passion and commitment to continually seek to improve standards of patient care
  • The energy and resilience to maintain performance and inspire confidence within a fast moving, challenging environment
  • Outstanding leadership skills with strong focus on values and behaviours.
