John Hunter Clinic for Sexual Health is looking for an highly experienced full time Band 7 Nurse Practitioner who is motivated, enthusiastic and possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills on a fixed term 12 month contract to cover maternity leave.
You will have strong clinical skills and knowledge and be committed to your on-going professional development and that of both services.
You will work as a self-directed independent practitioner managing a defined caseload of patients across both services with complex needs requiring regular follow-up care.
You will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality Sexual and Reproductive health care.
You will undertake relevant research and contribute to the clinical audit and education programme.

Main duties of the job- To use advanced sexual health/HIV knowledge and skills to independently manage total episodes of care within their own scope of professional practice
- Provide clinical guidance and specialist advice to the nursing team and act as a role model for advanced practice
- To supply and administer medicines under the Patient Group Directions or as a Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) for both sexual health/HIV and contraception patient’s
- Contribute to evidence based practice and research projects within the clinical areas and ensure that written standards for clinical care are formulated, utilised and reviewed regularly and as necessary
- Collaborate with the Lead Nurses appropriately for professional support and guidance
- To develop in collaboration with the Lead Nurses , Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP’s) and Clinic Manager guidelines and protocols relevant to sexual health/HIV and contraception
- Have a commitment to the development and implementation of sexual health/HIV and contraception initiatives both within the clinic and the community

- Assist the Clinic Manager with responsibility for the day to day management of the nursing staff in their absence
- Contribute to the business planning process for the clinic ensuring that the relevant aspects of the Nursing Strategy are incorporated and that the information is shared within nursing team as appropriate
- Ensure the departmental budget and resources are utilised effectively
- Assist with monitoring department activity, especially Young People’s, Outreach and Contraception Services through audit and other measurement tools and lead on action in response to outcomes
- Advise on the composition and skill mix of the nursing team taking into account the developments of advanced practice role
- Assist with the recruitment and selection process for nursing staff, ensuring that orientation packages are appropriate for the level of seniority and encompass Trust policies
- Ensure the retention of staff is considered a priority and all relevant strategies are in place to address this issue o Contribute to the appraisal of nursing staff in conjunction with the appraisers o Be aware of Health and Safety policies within the Trust and assist with responsibility for any training issues for staff regarding these in line with statutory requirements

Person specification
Experience
Essential criteria- Extensive Sexual Health/HIV experience including managing male and female patients
- To be competent and confident in asymptomatic and symptomatic screening of men and women
- Experience of working in contraception services
- Experience of working in outreach services
- Experience in gynaecology, counselling, research, and other experience related to the specialty
- Experience of leading clinical teams
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria- Registered Nurse
- Successfully completed teaching/assessing course
- Evidence of comprehensive professional development Relevant specialist courses/training including a recognised Family Planning qualification
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria- ble to perform sexual history taking and examination in accordance with local and Trust guidelines Demonstrates knowledge of stress management
- Knowledge of HIV related issues Highly developed communication skills and ability to convey complex and sensitive information to others Demonstrates an in depth knowledge of specialty
- Experience of managing a budget Proven management, leadership and supervisory skills
