Job overview

These posts are ideally for doctors who have completed core surgical training or equivalent (at least 2 years’ relevant experience post-Foundation training) and who may wish to apply for higher training in a relevant surgical specialty. It will also be suitable for doctors who wish to pursue a non-training grade career at registrar level.

A total of 3 posts will be available in general surgery as education and research fellows.

The post will be suitable for applicants who will complete core training in 2025 but who have not yet secured a training number and who may wish to develop their portfolios ahead of ST3 recruitment in 2026. Activities undertaken in this post will provide wide range of opportunities including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching opportunities, research and quality improvement/audit projects leading to regional or national presentations and publications and leadership/management roles.

There will be clinical exposure in general surgery as part of the emergency ambulatory theatre team.

The post would also be suitable for current higher trainees who wish to take time out of training to develop non-clinical areas of their portfolio.

The weekly timetable will revolve around provision of overnight on-call cover for general surgery and orthopaedics at the Royal Gwent Hospital. Daytime activities can be tailored to suit the requirements of the applicant, focussing on either education, research, quality improvement or a mix thereof.

Main duties of the job

This post has become available to provide resident overnight cover to intermediate-acuity surgical, orthopaedic and gynaecology patients in a cold elective site in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The postholders will lead the surgical Hospital at Night team with junior doctor and ANP support.
There is resident anaesthetic cover through the Post-Operative Care Unit. Senior specialty-specific support is provided by the relevant on-call teams at the acute site (Grange University Hospital) with an efficient and timely step-up transport service available 24/7, staffed by in house established transfer practitioners.

There is no on-site CEPOD facility and post-holders will not be expected to undertake any out of hours surgery.

Out of hours responsibilities will be broadly similar to that of an RMO in an independent hospital. A bedroom is provided for use while resident on call, and a well-appointed surgical mess is available.

The post will be based within General Surgery, with daytime activities tailored to individuals’ needs or preferences, including education, management, quality improvement and research activity. Limited in-hours clinical exposure to emergency surgery will be provided as part of the ambulatory emergency theatre team.

It is likely there will be funding toward postgraduate educational courses/qualifications.
