Level: Practice Nurse Band 7 equivalent Job summary: The Practice Nurse Manager at Widcombe Surgery is a pivotal role responsible for leading the nursing team and ensuring the delivery of high quality, patient centred care.
This role involves strategic planning, clinical oversight, and operational management to enhance patient outcomes and support the practice's objectives. The Practice Nurse Manager will work collaboratively with GPs, healthcare professionals, and administrative staff to foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities: Leadership & Management: Provide visionary leadership to the nursing team, promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence. Conduct regular team meetings, performance appraisals, and professional development sessions to ensure staff engagement and growth.
Develop and manage staff rotas, ensuring optimal coverage and efficient resource utilisation. Mentor and support nursing staff, fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. Clinical Operations: Oversee the delivery of nursing services to include: Meeting patients nursing care needs as identified, or where care has been transferred to the nurse by a GP or other senior clinician.

Deliver nurse led care including: Cervical cytology sampling Baby and childhood immunisations Travel vaccinations Seasonal vaccinations Contraceptive pill checks Leg Ulcer management including Doppler assessments and compression therapy Contributing to the management of long-term conditions, such as Asthma, Hypertension, CHD, Diabetes, COPD Administration of immunisations and medications under PGDs, PSDs National Protocols.

Intramuscular/subcutaneous injections Chronic and acute wound management, Skin suture and clip removal Venepuncture Urine testing ECGs Vital signs Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including the initiation of effective emergency care Provide training and supervision for Healthcare assistants and Nursing associates Participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines and in the induction of all members of practice staff.

Develop, implement, and evaluate care plans for patients with long-term conditions, ensuring personalised and effective management. Ensure accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation of patient care and clinical activities. Coordinate and manage vaccination programmes, health screenings, and chronic disease clinics Clinical Policies and Protocols: Develop, review, and update clinical policies and protocols, ensuring alignment with current regulations and best practices.
Ensure all staff are informed and compliant with clinical protocols, providing training and support as needed. Monitor adherence to clinical protocols and implement corrective actions as necessary to maintain high standards of care. Infection Control: Lead infection prevention and control initiatives, ensuring compliance with national guidelines and standards.
Conduct regular audits and risk assessments to identify and mitigate infection risks within the practice. Provide training and guidance to staff on infection control practices and protocols. COSHH Management: Oversee the management of hazardous substances, ensuring compliance with Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
Conduct risk assessments and implement control measures to ensure a safe working environment. Maintain accurate records of hazardous substances and ensure staff are trained in safe handling and disposal procedures. Quality Assurance & Improvement: Monitor and evaluate the quality of nursing care, identifying areas for improvement and implementing evidence based interventions.

Lead and participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and risk management initiatives. Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, standards, and policies, maintaining a safe and effective care environment. The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy, to include: Health & Safety Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards Reporting potential risks identified.

Patient Care & Education: Provide direct patient care, including assessments, treatments, and health education, as needed. Organise and lead patient education sessions, workshops, and support groups to empower patients in managing their health.
Act as a resource and advocate for patients and their families, providing guidance, support, and information. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with GPs, healthcare professionals, and administrative staff to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care delivery.
Facilitate effective communication and collaboration across the practice, promoting a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Participate in practice meetings, contributing to strategic planning and decisionmaking processes. Professional Development & Training: Encourage and support the professional development of the nursing team, identifying training needs and opportunities.
Stay updated with the latest healthcare advancements, integrating new knowledge and practices into the team. Develop and deliver training programmes and workshops to enhance the skills and competencies of the nursing staff. Qualifications: Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration.
Extensive experience in a nursing leadership role, preferably within a general practice or primary care setting. Expertise in long term condition management and chronic disease care. Strong leadership, organisational, and problem solving skills.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation abilities. Commitment to continuous professional development and lifelong learning.
