Using highly developed innovative management skills and actively challenge own and others traditional practice, to improve service delivery, patient centred care and communication. Assist the Director of Midwifery, Heads of Midwifery in providing professional leadership, management and advice within the Maternity service and to take professional responsibility for the designated clinical areas and services, ensuring that all teams work collaboratively to deliver integrated care.

Ensure midwifery workforce complies with Nursing and Midwifery Council Rules and Standards and local Health roster compliance. Ensure mechanisms in place to promote choice and personalised care. Continually monitor, evaluate and analyse the effectiveness of midwifery services.
To actively contribute to the strategic development of maternity services to meet both the present and future provisions in line with both Trust and national recommendations. To provide professional advice to patient, carers and colleagues. To contribute to the promotion and maintenance of clinical benchmarking, ensuring sharing and development of best practice.
Ensure midwives know how to access support of the Professional Midwifery Advocates, counsellor or any member of the leadership team. Promote a culture of working and integration of standards across the two sites. Promote high standards of infection control compliance.
To assist the Head of Midwifery in the development of policies/procedures in performance, risk management, recruitment and retention of health and safety. The post holder will deputise for the Deputy or Head of Midwifery as necessary and support other areas if required.
To have continuing responsibility for effective professional, clinical leadership and management of the intrapartum care settings, acting as a role model. Ensure midwives are supported in developing strong leadership skills, delivering on their core functions in specialist roles, as team leaders; coordinators and managers.
Support band 7 midwives and specialist midwives to ensure they are developed to undertake management and leadership responsibilities to enable the effective running of their clinical areas. Be responsible for the direct line management of Band 7 coordinators and ward manager.
To empower staff to create an environment, which is challenging, stimulating and supportive to individuals, promoting life-long learning in the improvement of patient care. To be visible and accessible to staff and users. To ensure the development, implementation and regular review of protocols/guidelines, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
To be a change agent to promote innovation and development to ensure best practice. Support managers to ensure all areas are compliant with Trust and local training standards. To develop managerial and professional partnerships with relevant organisations.
To work in partnership with the University and Midwifery Educationalists to ensure that clinical practice reflects the needs of the students. Act as a role model through the provision of effective professional leadership and demonstration of competent and accountable midwifery practice.
