We need an individual who can bring occupational therapy assessment, intervention and outcome measurement to life for our patients. Our passionate team will support you to develop your occupational therapy skills, clinical reasoning and reflective practice.

Our patients will teach you about the importance of being client centered and how to solve problems creatively.

This Band 5 post is rotational, working within our acute inpatient team with or with our rheumatology team, where you will get to work with children and young people with inflammatory conditions.

You will be given an opportunity to work in a vibrant and dynamic environment, committed to developing your skills, including splinting, prescribing equipment, complex discharge planning and general rehabilitation.

We are looking for individuals who are enthusiastic, flexible and motivated to learn with excellent interpersonal skills. A passion for working with children, young people and their families is essential.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be a member of the Occupational Therapy team and work as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team within the hospital. Duties may include in-patient and out-patient work, taking place on Trust premises or occasionally within the community setting.

The Occupational Therapy Service works with children, young people and their families. Assessment and treatment are carried out in numerous settings including the Occupational Therapy department, hospital ward, or home/community settings. The Occupational Therapist develops the child and young person’s ability to master self-help, work and play skills using purposeful activity and adapted techniques and equipment to assist performance.

This post is in Birmingham Childrens Hospital where you will work with a wide range of MDT colleagues and community service providers.

A Senior Occupational Therapist will provide regular support and supervision. The Head of Occupational Therapy will be available as necessary.

The post will operate on a rotational basis between acute inpatients and rheumatology teams. It may be possible to negotiate work in another area if an opportunity arises.

Essential criteria
  • Professional Registration as an Occupational Therapist (in place or in progress)
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant paediatric post graduate courses/study

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to apply Occupational Therapy Process to patients in a clinical setting
  • Experience of using Occupational Therapy assessment to plan/support discharge from hospital
  • Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in paediatrics in a hospital setting
Our current Mental Health Services division may be transferring the provision of its services to Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust (BSMHFT). Whilst at present you are applying for a position within Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation should you be successful in gaining a position within Mental Health Services, your employment may in the future be transferred over to BSMHFT.
