**CAMHS Inpatient Social Worker**

An opportunity has become available for the position of band 6 Social Worker at The Hope Unit - inpatient CAMHS.

CAMHS experience is desirable but not essential as transferrable skills would be beneficial to the role.

Hope ward is a 12 bedded CAMHS General Adolescent Unit located at Pennine House on the Fairfield General Hospital Site. Pennine Care CAMHS inpatients is currently undergoing an exciting period of transformation and this role offers opportunity for professional development and training opportunities.

We are a friendly and dynamic team.

You would have a small caseload and undertake assessments of young people’s and families complex social needs in order to identify those who require social work interventions.

Being part of an established multidisciplinary team and alongside our established social work colleague you would provide oversight and management of safeguarding and liaison with statutory services to support to the inpatient team.

Main duties of the job

This post is a specialised social work service to young people with mental health problems within the context of their families or carers.

You would provide a specialised CAMHS social work service for young people and their families who are referred to CAMHS inpatient services.

You would operate as an integral member of the Inpatient Team and actively participate in the multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment of young people with complex mental health needs and their families/carers

to identify any gaps in support and make necessary referrals or requests for support.

You would be skilled in co-ordinated liaison with relevant professionals and agencies to support the development of appropriate and robust discharge plans.

There is opportunity to actively participate in the induction and teaching programmes organised for new starters, junior staff and students within the acute pathway.

You would also be a source of specialised social work advice and guidance to team members by remaining up to date with current legislation and social work practice.

You would act as an advocate for young people, ensuring that their individual rights are upheld in decisions about their care and treatment and liaise with parents and carers in order to ensure that information is communicated effectively and that they are involved, as appropriate, in decisions about their child’s care and treatment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a specialised social work service to young people with mental health problems within the context of their families or carers.
To provide a specialised CAMHS social work service for young people and their families who are referred to CAMHS inpatient services.
To lead on the development of the social work role within an inpatient setting by clearly defining roles and responsibilities and promoting the role of social work in collaboration with the leadership team.
To operate as an integral member of the Inpatient Team and actively participate in the multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment of young people with complex mental health needs and their families/carers

To work closely with partner agencies, as appropriate, to gather information which will inform a holistic assessment of a young person’s needs. To identify any gaps in support and make necessary referrals or requests for support. Co-ordinate liaison with relevant professionals to support the development of appropriate and robust discharge plans.

To actively use and attend individual social work supervision to manage own caseload of clients with complex needs using evidence based principles to develop specialised programmes of care and regularly evaluate interventions.
To actively participate in the induction and teaching programmes organised for new starters, junior staff and students within the acute pathway.
Liaise with other professionals, statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure the best possible service is provided for young people and their families within the framework of the Care Programme Approach (CPA).

Jointly lead and coordinate service user and carer participation within the service linking into the wider CAMHS strategy.

To undertake assessments of young people’s and families complex social needs in order to identify those who require social work interventions.
To plan and organise programmes of care, providing individual and / or group interventions as appropriate, to meet the identified goals and needs of individuals and their carers where appropriate.
To ensure the wishes and feelings of young people are effectively considered and included in all aspects of their treatment and care.
To monitor, evaluate and modify programmes of care in partnership with young people and their carers in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness.
To actively contribute to the individual risk assessments of young people with complex mental health needs and multiple presenting problems and comply with clinical risk assessment results when planning highly specialised care programmes.
Plan and prioritise own caseload of young people with complex mental health needs in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.
To liaise with relevant agencies, including Children’s social care, to share complex information and help develop a shared understanding of the needs of the young people you are working with and their families.
To work effectively as part of the CAMHS Inpatient Multi-disciplinary Team by using opportunities for supervision and continuing professional development via the Local Authority
To understand the interface between the Mental Health Act and other legislation and to offer support and guidance to the MDT in relation to considering the legal aspects of the needs of complex young people
To have knowledge of therapeutic interventions, that is evidence based and under pinned by theory.
To be a source of specialised social work advice and guidance to team members by remaining up to date with current legislation and social work practice
To act as an advocate for young people, ensuring that their individual rights are upheld in decisions about their care and treatment.
To liaise with parents and carers in order to ensure that information is communicated effectively and that they are involved, as appropriate, in decisions about their child’s care and treatment.

Participate in time limited professional meetings post discharge to assist young people with complex mental health needs, and their families, to facilitate a smooth transition from inpatient services back to their community.

To make referrals to other professionals and agencies as appropriate.

To keep professional records up to date, communicate with referrers and maintain professional activity data in accordance with current Trust policies, practice and quality standards.

To implement appropriate safeguarding practices, promoting the welfare of children and young people and to follow the nationally and locally agreed child protection policies and procedures
To liaise with children’s services directly in the event of unsatisfactory responses to referrals. This could include escalating concerns with the support of the safeguarding leads and commissioning colleagues

To refer to the appropriate Children’s Social Care any young person unable to return home. This would involve liaising with children’s social care and escalating concerns when a young person had no home to return to or an adult with parental responsibility

To demonstrate a positive leadership style and promote a commitment to high standards of care and professionalism within the inpatient Service.
To provide management and practice supervision to members of the Multi-disciplinary Team as appropriate.
To undertake further specialist training that will enhance own performance and utilise these new skills to develop own specialist practice and that of Multi-disciplinary Team members.
To take a lead role in developing professional practice within own speciality by participating in professional issues, as an active member of appropriate working parties and professional interest groups; and through the reading of professional literature and journals.

Research

To actively promote and maintain robust and effective communication systems within the Service and the Trust and actively participate in the monitoring and evaluation of these, making changes where necessary in collaboration with the inpatient Service Manager.

To ensure that information is communicated within appropriate timescales to enable young people and parents and carers to fully engage in decision making.
To ensure young people are involved in the decision about who receives their personal information.

To establish robust and clear lines of communication with all parties involved in the care of the young person with complex mental health

To communicate effectively with young people, taking into consideration potential barriers including their cognitive developmental level, behavioural / emotional disturbance, speech and language difficulties or psychiatric presentation. This may often require the use of more creative methods of communication including drawing, signs etc.

To regularly and actively participate in case conferences and multi-agency meetings and contribute to managerial meetings where necessary.
To maintain clear and accurate records of all specialised programmes of care including individual and group sessions. These can be in the form of written text or computer storage.

To prepare and present formal reports as required.

To undertake necessary social work training and continuing professional development aligned to Social Work England requirements

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Registration with Social Work England
  • Completion of ASYE plus short courses and experience to post graduate diploma level
  • Plus willingness to undertake further training relevant to the role resulting from legislative or service changes, as appropriate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent local authority child focussed social work experience.
  • Experience of using a range of approaches with young people and families.2
  • Experience of multi-agency coordination where young people have complex mental needs.
Desirable criteria
  • Working with adults and/or young people with mental health needs and other complex needs eg substance misuse
  • Experience of working across health/social care/education boundaries
  • Working as a lone professional within a team

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a range of interventions and assessment methods related to the speciality
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant children’s and mental health legislation and guidelines.
  • A range of theoretical knowledge underpinning practice.
  • Working knowledge of child development and an understanding of up to date young people’s mental health issues
  • Understanding of risk assessment & risk management.
  • Good working knowledge of the cultures & religions of the communities of Pennine Care NHS FT
