JOB DESCRIPTION - PRACTICE NURSE Summary: - to assess the nursing needs of patients and provide appropriate nursing care and treatment in participation with the Doctors or independently according to agreed and documented protocols. 1. To assist the Doctors in the running of:- a) Baby and child immunisation clinics b) Minor operations c) Health promotion and any chronic disease management clinics undertaken by the Practice.
2. With regard to the fore mentioned health promotion and disease management clinics, the responsible nurse will be required to:- a) Acquaint themselves with all the necessary equipment and procedures necessary for the fulfillment of the aims of each clinic b) Follow a pre-determined management protocol as outlined by the responsible Doctor/Nurse.
c) Make every effort to maintain an up to date knowledge in medical nursing. Implicit in this is a willingness to undergo further training or attachment to improve their skills. d) Maintain an adequate supply of patient information and advisory leaflets and to develop an awareness of all other sources of information and help that are available to patients.
3. To administer immunisations for:- a) Infants and pre-school children as directed by the Health Authority b) Booster tetanus/diphtheria and polio immunisations for adults c) Pre holiday immunisation for patients. Nurses should acquaint themselves with the requirement for vaccinations of the countries to be visited and to be able to advise patients accordingly.
Additionally nurses are to give relevant advice on prevention of infections, illness, health and malaria prevention d) To carry out vaccinations as determined by specific public health requirements. 4. To see and advise patients on request with a view to diagnosis, treatment or referral for further advice and/or treatment from another source, which may be a Doctor, social worker, health visitor, district nurse, chiropodist, dentist etc.
This includes giving advice by telephone. 5. To carry out diagnostic tests which lie within their capability such as urine analysis, blood pressure monitoring, height and weight measurement, blood glucose monitoring using a glucose meter, spirometry, occasional venepuncture and electrocardiography.

6. To assist in the treatment and management of numerous conditions which require regular attention and supervision, such as re-dressing of post-operative wounds, gravitational ulcers, the removal of sutures and any emergency that presents. 7. To carry out diagnostic tests which lie within their capability such as urine analysis, blood pressure monitoring, height and weight measurement, blood glucose monitoring using a glucose meter, spirometry, occasional venipuncture and electrocardiography.

8. To assist in the treatment and management of numerous conditions which require regular attention and supervision, such as re-dressing of post-operative wounds, gravitational ulcers, the removal of sutures and any emergency that presents. 9. Nurses should be acquainted with the electronic pathology forms and specimen bottles and should complete the details on the said forms and bottles in anticipation of the Doctor's needs.
10. To maintain a clean and tidy clinical environment within the Doctors consulting rooms, in the Treatment rooms and the nurse's consultation rooms. 11. The nurse must have a good working knowledge of the use of the computer and its use in the documentation of the consultations and clinical activities and assessment carried out within the Practice, thus enabling the Practice to maintain a full, up to date record of all activities 12.
To ensure the prompt removal of used equipment such as speculae, proctoscopes etc from the Doctors consulting rooms after consultations and to replace any items of equipment that may be kept therein. 13. To order and maintain a full stock of equipment such as needles, syringes, specimen bottles, as obtained from the Health Authority, hospital pathology department.
To maintain the stock levels of sterile equipment. 14. From time to time the nurse may be asked to undertake additional duties or to learn new skills and providing that you have been given adequate instructions or training, and then you may not reasonably refuse to undertake these duties.
You may also be asked to agree to attend occasional refresher courses or courses relating to the acquisition of new skills where your traveling and subsistence expenses will be be considered for reimbursement at the discretion of the Practice Manager.
The range of health promotion and screening activities currently undertaken by the Practice include:- a) Well woman clinic b) Hypertension screening and follow up clinic c) Family Planning clinic d) Vascular clinic CHD/diabetes/stroke e) Respiratory clinic asthma & COPD f) The domiciliary chronic disease management of certain patients.
g) Health screening checks for 40-74 year olds h) Phlebotomy Service for BRS patients. 14. Review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and practice protocols.
Work with patients in order to support compliance with, and adherence to, prescribed Treatments. Provide information and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter medication, medication regimes, side-effects and interactions 15. Assess patient travel health questionnaires & offer travel health advice referring on to specialist clinic if need be.
16. Undertake new patient checks. 17. Fit & remove 24 hour blood pressure monitor. 18. Promote & deliver seasonal influenza vaccinations. 19. Checking and recording Batch numbers and expiry dates of all drugs and vaccinations used in the Surgery.
Maintaining the cold chain for vaccinations at all times. 20. Be responsible for the custody of all drugs used in the treatment rooms. 21. Comply with the NMC Code of Conduct. 22. Be aware of the requirements of the Quality Outcome Framework and assist in achieving good outcomes through patient care.

23. Oversee the Health Care Assistant whilst he/she is working at the Practice. 24. To undertake any other duties as may be determined from time to time commensurate with the range of activities described above.
