The Great Western Hospital are seeking a Nurse Associate to join the team on the Neonatal Unit.

Main duties of the job

As a band 4 Nurse Associate you will be working alongside an experienced team to provide care to a range of babies with a variety of conditions. Our Neonatal unit has 18 cots, which is comprised of 2 intensive cots, 4 high dependency cots and 12 special care cots.

We are a designated Local Neonatal Unit, (Level 2) providing care for preterm babies from 27 weeks’ gestation and for sick new born babies. We also have a Transitional Care unit soon to have 8 beds.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  1. To undertake the core competencies for a nurse associate
  2. Work within clearly defined accountability frameworks and boundaries of limitation to provide the best possible care in collaboration with colleagues, patients, their families and carers.
  3. Contribute ideas and support with the implementation of change, ensuring compassion for service users is maintained.
  4. Assess the root causes of problems, and deal with them and with people with honesty and integrity, showing interest in your work and seeking and valuing the contributions of others
  5. Make best use of resources and time, to achieve service delivery, taking responsibility for own actions and self-development, demonstrating effective team leadership.
  6. To participate in the audit cycle of clinical practices and procedures.
  7. Effectively use internal IT systems to meet identified needs and plan work effectively, maintaining confidentiality at all times.

  1. Escalate referrals for complex patient management needs to the registered practitioner.
  2. Pro-actively escalate any concerns about the provision of patient services to the appropriate registered practitioner.
  3. Work with multidisciplinary team colleagues towards achieving shared goals.
  4. Undertake reflective learning in relation to practice, listening to the opinions of others including patients. Provide and receive constructive feedback.
  5. Organise and manage own workload flexibly in accordance with patient needs.
  6. Continually assess and minimise risk, escalating to the registered practitioner as appropriate.
  7. It is anticipated that this role will continue to develop through the acquisition of further skills, knowledge and competencies to be determined within the clinical teams with the focus on patient needs.

  10. To support the nurse in charge with the day to day planning, the delivery of a high quality nursing service and the continuous improvement of that service.
  11. Act as advocate for the babies and families in their care
  12. Adhere to the Trust’s safeguarding policies and procedures and ensure that know and practice enables children to be safeguarded
  13. Effectively liaise with all agencies including external who are providing support to families and children at home
  14. An understanding of the structure for the delivery for Community and social care services.
  15. Supervision of support workers and student nurses
  16. Commitment to undertake required training

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Associate
  • Evidence of personal portfolio
  • Current NMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 safeguarding

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience nursing children in an acute / community setting
  • Current knowledge of developments in healthcare
  • Able to demonstrate effective consolidation of nursing knowledge and practice after qualification
  • PBLS
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 safeguarding children
