Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor to join the Imperial Memory Unit at Charing Cross Hospital as a Clinical Research Physician (Mat leave cover).

The post will provide experience in Memory Disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease & other dementias. The successful candidate will be a key member of an enthusiastic clinical research team with direct involvement in clinical research and will have the opportunity to gain experience in the establishment and implementation of patient- and healthy volunteer-based clinical trials.
While this is primarily a service post (i.e., provide on-site medical care), opportunities will be available to participate in the various educational activities the Trust provides. Applicants must have a relevant medical degree and be fully registered with the GMC.

A good knowledge of general medicine, and up to date training in advanced life support (ALS) and good clinical practice (GCP) are desirable. Experience in clinical research and clinical trials is desirable. This post is not formally approved for training, but the post holder will have Consultant-led Educational Supervision and will be supported in their professional development.

This is a full time post with an initial contract for 12 months with a view to extension.

Main duties of the job

The main responsibilities of the post are to safely and carefully conduct patient visits and procedures which may include: vital signs, blood collections, patient examinations, as well as documentation and review of results. The skills required include phlebotomy and cannulation skills, post graduate experience in internal medicine and / or neurology, and excellent patient communication skills.

It is essential that the post-holder is able to perform CSF lumbar punctures, or willing to train for this if not. Please see the Job Description for more information.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice
  • Eligibility to work in the UK

Fitness to practise

Essential criteria
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core medical training or equivalent
  • Evidence of experience in Neurology or other specialty relevant to dementia and memory disorders
  • Experience in clinical trials
  • Knowledge and qualification in Good Clinical Practice
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency in a range of medical procedures as an indication of manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • Able to perform venepuncture, cannulation, and CSF lumbar puncture.
  • Evidence of competence in management of medical emergencies and in-patients through continuous work-based assessments, portfolio evidence, including log book documentation if applicable
  • Evidence of competence to work without direct supervision where appropriate
  • Demonstrate current ALS certification or equivalent
