Applications are invited from registered Medical Practitioners for a Clinical Teaching Fellow post, within the department of Department of Obstetrics and General Gynaecology in Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. This is a fixed term post, for a period of 12 months which will commence in August 2025

Main duties of the job

This post would suit an individual with an interest in medical education, an awareness of the undergraduate curriculum relating to Reproductive Health, and a desire to expand their teaching skills and experience. The post includes the opportunity to undertake a formal qualification in Medical Education through the (Certificate or Diploma) during their employment within the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Additionally, this post are best suited to someone who is considering pursuing a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the future and provides a good foundation for embarking on Specialty Training. An interest in Obstetrics and Gynaecology should be evident within applicants’ CVs/application forms, and it would be highly beneficial if Part 1 MRCOG had been obtained or was in the process of being obtained, although not an essential requirement.

The post is advertised for a doctor who would function at Tier 1 level, (SHO grade/Junior Clinical Teaching Fellow).

The successful candidate will be key members of the undergraduate education team within the department, working alongside the Midwife Teaching Fellow and the Consultant Lead for Undergraduate Education, and therefore an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team is a key requirement.

The post will involve co-ordinating timetables and providing the undergraduate clinical teaching programme for both year 3 and year 5 Medical Students from Newcastle University, and also providing academic mentorship for a small number of final year students throughout the year.

The Clinical Teaching Fellow will join the wider group of teaching fellows within the Trust in supporting the assessment and examination of students at certain points in the year and will be expected to be available for these specified dates.

On average, there will be 5 teaching sessions and 5 clinical/professional development sessions per week. This post does not have an on-call commitment, but there would be opportunities for locum on call shifts, which would enhance the experience for the post holder within the specialty.

The main clinical duties are to support a busy obstetric department (approximately 2000 deliveries per year) and to support in O&G surgical lists and outpatient clinics. Specialist clinics and training can be arranged according to career interests.

Essential criteria
  • Meet the requirements of the GMC’s Good Medical Practice
  • Basic knowledge of physiology/anatomy pertaining to Reproductive Health
  • Examination skills (within Obstetrics and Gynaecology) at SHO level
  • Appropriate NHS experience
  • Eligibility or valid / relevant GMC registration.
  • Experience in formal and informal teaching, especially undergraduate education.
  • Clinical experience in O&G at SHO level
  • Commitment to continuing educational and personal development.
  • MBBS or equivalent

  • Advanced knowledge of IT
  • Advanced teaching/presentation skills
  • Progress towards Higher Medical Qualification.
  • Aiming to pursue a career in OG
  • Research experience
