For successful applicants we will provide you with:

  • A comprehensive competency based education package with support to develop skills and knowledge
  • Upon completion of the mandatory Qualified in Speciality Foundation course we will support you with time and investment to attend the 10 week NICU Nurse programme which will make you a Qualified in Speciality recognised NICU Nurse. (Subject to meeting performance targets)

Main duties of the job

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 (RN Child/RSCN/RN) Staff Nurses to join our NICU family at Bradford Teaching Hospitals.

Experienced QIS NICU Nurses especially sought.

The post holder is expected to deliver safe and high quality nursing care whilst ensuring effective, efficient and economic use of services and resources.

The post holder will maintain a safe environment for babies, families and staff, reporting concerns as they arise and ensuring appropriate remedies/ action plans are put in place.

The post holder will identify areas of practice development within the service and support the team leader to deliver on departmental goals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical
  • Ability to organise own workload with regard to assessing patient needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of a programme of care which is evidence based ensuring that the family are fully involved in this process.
  • Ability to respond to complex/demanding patient situations both clinically and administratively.
  • Carries out fundamental and enhanced nursing duties within Trust policies, procedures and guidelines reporting to the sisters/ charge nurses and providing feedback on issues of concern and performance management.
  • Practices models of nursing and evidence based care which contributes to the quality of the patient’s / family experience.
  • Works as part of the multidisciplinary team fostering good inter-departmental relationships and helping to achieve continuous quality improvement.
  • Continuously develops relevant skills and knowledge within the clinical specialty.
  • Promotes health education and health promotion.
  • Has a keen safety focus.
  • Involves the family appropriately in decision making.
  • Deals effectively and sensitively with client’s issues, collaborating with the PALS service and adhering to the Trust’s policy on handling complaints.
  • Actively participates in all aspects of the Clinical Governance process.
  • Works within national policy frameworks relevant to Infants, Children, Young People and their families.
  • Responsibility for ensuring that adequate stock levels are maintained and that robust systems are in place for the ordering of supplies.
  • Reports clinical incidents in a timely and accurate manner in order to aid the learning of the wider team and manage future risk.
Professional
  • Responsible as a registered nurse / Midwife for the control and administration of drugs within the regulations as per Bradford Teaching Foundation Hospitals NHS Trust, the NMC and national legislation.
  • Develops skills and knowledge in Clinical Practice completing the Yorkshire Neonatal Network Competencies within six months of commencement of the role.
  • Agrees to apply for Neonatal foundation programme by the end of probationary period.
  • Acts as Assessor/Mentor and there will be an expectation to attend appropriate courses and training as dictated by appraisal/management.
  • Acts as a preceptor.
  • Works within the NMC Code of Practice.
  • Practices agreed models of nursing and systems of care as directed by the Ward/Department Senior Sister.
  • Is involved in new initiatives, supporting the Ward/Department Senior Sister in their implementation.
  • Is prepared to present topics of interest, developments, feedback from Courses/Study days to peers and seniors if requested.
  • Participates in developments relating to clinical governance.
Staff/self development
  • Agrees personal development plan and maintains an up-to-date Knowledge and Skills Framework folder.
  • Has understanding/involvement in Clinical Audit.
  • Maintains a personal, professional profile.
  • Attends mandatory training.
  • Develops within the scope of professional practice.
  • Works towards actively achieving appraisal outcomes.
  • Is involved in clinical supervision as required.
  • Participates with Special Interest groups developing up to date practice
  • Ensures staff are supported, educated, and informed.
  • Is familiar with the role and responsibilities of the senior nursing team within the Neonatal Unit.
  • There is an expectation that applicants will contribute to their teams and ward development
  • Commits to attend/engage with all education opportunities offered by the management team when asked. This includes the Qualified in Specialty NICU Nurse course (fully funded).
Research
  • Supports the implementation of evidence based nursing care.
  • Supports staff to carry out relevant literature searches pertinent to patient care.
  • Develops and implements a strategy for the evaluation of health care interventions.
  • Facilitates opportunities for staff to investigate practice using the appropriate methodological approaches.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Applicants for this post must hold a current registration with the NMC as a RN Child/RSCN or RN, in the United Kingdom. Or be due to qualify by April 2025.
  • For overseas candidates, all OSCE’s must already be complete and NMC pin issued.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as a Neonatal Nurse (QIS) or experience of working/being a service user on a neonatal unit

  • Holds Qualified in Speciality Neonatal Care qualification (formerly ebn 405) or *willingness to work towards and apply for the QIS Neonatal Care course within the first 2 years of employment.
