The Occupational Therapy Team at Great Ormond Street Hospital are looking for a Band 8a Occupational Therapist who has extensive experience of working in the field of Orthopaedics and Spines. This would ideally be with children with complex physical disabilities, but we will also consider applicants from an adult Orthopaedic and Spines background.
Clinically you will provide expert Occupational Therapy input into the Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgical pathways in both the Outpatient and Inpatient settings. As the Team Lead you will also support and manage the team of 4 other OT’s within Orthopaedics and Spines.You will also be responsible for supporting service development, both in the Orthopaedic Team but also in the wider OT Team where you will form part of the senior leadership team.
Knowledge of child development would be helpful, although not essential, whilst previous experience of working in or with Community Services would be useful as there is a large liaison aspect to this role. The ability to promote a functional approach that both enables engagement in meaningful occupations and promotes participation is a necessity.
Main duties of the job
The role involves provision of Occupational Therapy Assessment and Intervention within the Orthopaedic and Spinal Service, primarily preparing a young person and their family for surgery through making the appropriate community arrangements and then providing post surgical rehab.
You will be responsible for providing intervention that supports and enables these children and young people to engage in chosen occupations as much as possible, and to utilise a variety of therapeutic approaches to promote motivation and wider participation post-surgical intervention.The role also includes working with young people and families to support their understanding of their condition, and the impact surgery may have on their everyday life during the recovery period and beyond.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training
Essential criteria- Degree or equivalent qualification in Occupational Therapy
- Health and Care Professions Council registration
- Continued professional development across clinical, research and leadership pillars
- Post graduate training in standardised paediatric specific occupational therapy assessment and evidence-based interventions
- MSc in a relevant field to OT
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria- Extensive knowledge of orthopaedic and spinal interventions
- Extensive experience as an OT working within the field of orthopaedics and spines
- Experience in supervising OTs and student OTs along with the excellent interpersonal and communication skills needed to support and teach junior staff
- Previous experience of leading service development including auditing of standards
- Extensive knowledge and experience of using a range of outcome tools to demonstrate the effectiveness of Occupational Therapy provision/intervention.
- Experience of working with children and young people ideally in an orthopaedic setting
- Experience working with, assessing and handling fragile infants pre and post-surgery
- Advanced knowledge of child development and the impact of orthopeadic and neurological conditions on this.
- Experience of teaching and training
