Job overview
We are a dynamic team based at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust and are keen to expand our consultant body on the York site with another enthusiastic colleague. The prospectus should hopefully provide you greater insight about the fantastic team at York Hospital and the benefits of living and working in the beautiful cathedral city of York and its surrounding desirable villages.
The post is for a sub-specialist knee surgeon with an interest in soft tissue and sports injuries with a knee arthroplasty practice. The current working model includes a 1 in 10 rota covering a general trauma intake providing an in-reach and referral service to other Surgical Wards and the Emergency department.There is dedicated daily trauma list capacity for the prompt management of trauma to complement a 24/7 rota, supported by an experienced multi-disciplinary orthopaedic team.
The department has successfully trained and developed their own middle grades to the level of experienced associate specialists. These valuable colleagues supplement those trainees who are allocated from the Yorkshire deanery.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking a fellowship trained knee arthroplasty and soft tissue knee surgeon to join the current team of specialist knee surgeons (1.5 soft tissue knee specialists and 3.5 revision knee specialists). The post is available for 18 months on a NHS Locum basis.We run a weekly local arthroplasty MDT, and in the process of developing a hub and spoke MDT system within our local ICT with Hull. We have a wide range of complex cases in the unit including multi ligament reconstructions, peri-prosthetic fractures, infections and cases referred from our local oncology department with metastatic disease about the hip and knee.
We are also in the process of overhauling our virtual fracture clinic service and acute knee service, in which the successful candidate will be required to take an active role.
The successful candidate will be given full support in the form of joint Consultant operating for difficult cases, as well as with service development projects, patient safety initiatives and appraisal. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The principle duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients from and around York.
To, at all times, comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor
To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your clinical director.
To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of any Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s Corporate Induction.
To participate in the Trust’s statutory and mandatory training programme
To fully participate in the Consultant Peer Support Scheme and ensure personal attendance, when invited, at the Consultant Development Programme during your first year in post.
To be responsible for the clinical management of in and out patients under your care.
Person specification
Qualifications and Experience
Essential criteria- Hold a medical qualification
- Hold a license to practise with the General Medical Council
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Trauma & Orthopaedics
- Recognised upper limb fellowship
- BLS ATLS
- MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
- Substantive NHS experience
Clinical Practice/Competence
Essential criteria- Ability to demonstrate clinical experience and skill in general Orthopaedic trauma, Knee Arthroplasty and Soft Tissue Knee
- Demonstrates a sound knowledge of clinical governance practice
- Experience of working in or setting up clinical decision unit service
Mentoring & Teaching
Essential criteria- Experience of teaching undergraduates and post grad trainees
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Experience of undertaking audits and presenting their findings
- Ability to critically review research
- Experience of supervision of postgraduate trainees
- Publications in peer review journals
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
Team Work and Leadership
Essential criteria- Works effectively with others towards shared goals, welcoming diverse perspectives
