The Head of Nursing will collaborate closely with the Programme Lead, Medical Team, General Manager for Children’s Services, and the Divisional Director of Nursing and Governance to support the Managing Director of St George’s in ensuring the safe and effective transfer of the Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) for cancer in South London from RMH/SGUH to Evelina.

The successful candidate will provide nursing leadership to align the PTC transfer programme strategically with internal priorities at SGUH and contribute to the development of the Group Children’s Services strategy. Additionally, they will provide the nursing leadership support the planning and delivery of associated projects as SGUH identifies and implements new service opportunities following the transition from PTC service delivery

Main duties of the job

The Head of Nursing will spearhead nursing and AHP retention and recruitment efforts during the transition period, collaborating with workforce colleagues and the transition team to represent St George’s at programme meetings. They will engage with stakeholders to achieve transition objectives while supporting affected staff through Human Resources and Communications teams.
The role includes fostering a person-centred patient experience, advising on stakeholder engagement, analysing patient outcomes to inform recommendations, for a safe transition. They will provide visible, compassionate leadership to maintain staff morale and support multi-professional collaboration, building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Additionally, the Nursing Lead will present complex information effectively, ensuring alignment with the transition’s vision and goals. The role includes establishing robust risk management systems with clear escalation points and preparing reports on clinical aspects of the transfer for Trust Boards and external stakeholders, such as NHSE, as required.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC registration
  • Management/Leadership qualification or evidence of equivalent level of experience or competence
  • Recognised Cancer Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with children with cancer
  • Experience of producing high quality reports in a timely manner for consideration at Senior level internally and externally.
  • In depth knowledge of paediatric cancer in a Primary Treatment Centre Environment.
