We would like an experienced ophthalmic nurse to join us as we continue our journey to deliver the best care, by the best people in the best way possible.

We are a welcoming department with a great nursing team working harmoniously with each other and the rest of the Oxford Ophthalmology clinical and non-clinical staff groups.

To be our chosen applicant you must be an exceptional nurse who has some leadership experience at band 5 or above as well as sound knowledge and skills for the care of patients with eye conditions. In addition you will be be an outstanding role model delivering a high standard of care whilst supporting more junior staff and contributing to service development.

We would like you to have an ophthalmology-specific post-registration qualification or be working towards this.

These attributes will enable you to happily and competently deliver great care in some or all of the following:
  • Eye Emergency Care (including telephone triage)
  • Pre-operative assessment
  • Nurse-led outpatient clinical activity
  • Lead and support junior staff and students
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the Ophthalmic Multidisciplinary Team
  • Contribute to service improvement in the specialty.

In Ophthalmology, we are completely devoted the development and education of our staff and have invested significant time and energy into providing a number of specialist nurse roles. Furthermore we deliver a successful Level 7 Post-Graduate Certificate in Advanced Patient Centred Ophthalmology Care in collaboration with, and validated by, Northampton University.

The Oxford Eye Hospital is a busy outpatient department treating over 106,000 patients a year in the full range of ophthalmology clinics including an emergency department and pre-operative assessment. Our team is made up of over 45 members of staff including specialist nurses, nursing assistants, band 4 assistant practitioners and nursing associates, ECLOs and a department house keeper.

You will be supported by the Clinical Unit Manager and be encouraged to continue your professional development as an Ophthalmic Nurse and as a leader. In addition, we are planning on having more nurses undertaking intravitreal injections. Interested nurses who are accepted on to and pass their training course are then paid at band 7 for their injections sessions (equal to 8 hours/week).

We will consider applicants looking for part-time hours; most staff work compressed hours (longer but fewer days/week) but we are happy to discuss other options for flexible working.

The overall purpose of this post is to:
  • Co-ordinate and supervise the delivery of evidence-based care to a group of patients within the department, whilst acting as a role model.
  • Undertake telephone-triage of patients presenting with ophthalmic accidents and emergencies
  • Provide clinical leadership.
  • Promote effective team functioning.
  • To work at a clinical level commensurate with specialist nursing in the field of Ophthalmology
