Job overview

This post is for a Consultant Radiologist with a Sub-speciality Interest in Gynaecological and Genito-urinary Radiology. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Radiology (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview.

If International Medical Graduate, should already have CESR application submitted and have written GMC confirmation of successful application at time of interview.

Interviews will take place on Monday, 23rd June 2025

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant is required to maintain the expanding workload of the department including supporting the extensive department input into MDT meetings, to meet waiting list targets and to enable the introduction of extended working.

The appointed individual would be expected to have a sub-specialty interest in Uro-gynae imaging and to contribute to the general workload of the department. There is flexibility in the number of general sessions expected. There are currently 15.8 full time consultants in post and one Associate Specialist, one specialty doctor and one Locum consultant.

The department’s current consultants operate very much as a team and are looking for colleagues who are keen to work in this environment. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the general workload and participate in the on-call rota, Currently 1 in 17.
The consultants are second on call. The initial contact for on call imaging is provided by a central on call Hub staffed by regional STs supported by an integrated RIS (Wellbeing) and PACS - Carestream Global Worklist. This service is provided on weekdays from 5pm to 9am and during weekends.

The on-call radiologist is on site on weekends from 9am-3pm.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

For more information regarding the main responsibilities and requirements essential for this role please refer to the ‘supporting documents’ heading and review the job description and person specification which will outline the duties of the role including a proposed job plan.

The Radiology Departments contain an extensive range of imaging facilities to support the work. There is a GEMS MES in place ensuring regular planned refresh of all the imaging equipment with a robust planned maintenance programme. In 2018-19, this has included the installation of four 128 slice GE scanners and three GE MRI scanners – including a 3T and two 1.5T wide bore scanners. On the STHK site, we have 8 GE USS machines and 2 CANON machines.

There is an interventional suite equipped with a Siemens Artis Q ceiling mounted C arm system, two C-Arm fluoroscopy rooms,15 ultrasound rooms, gamma camera with SPECT/CT, DEXA, dental, OPG and coned beam CT and 13 plain film rooms, of which the majority are DR.

Job Plan

The applicant will be contracted for 10 Programmed Activities as per the new consultant contract, 7.0 related to direct clinical care, 0.5 for the on-call commitment and 2.5 for supporting professional activity.
  1. 5 SPA is towards individual Core CPD for appraisal and revalidation. 0.5 SPA is for Clinical Supervision, Audit and Mandatory training.

Additional 0.5 SPA will be awarded for additional roles undertaken within the department for eg: Medical Appraiser, Cross-Sectional Lead etc.

A more detailed job plan would be discussed prior to appointment depending on the candidates sub specialist interests.

The department currently has Specialist registrars providing 1st on call with consultant cover via teleradiology. Current on call commitment is 1 in 17 (Band 3%, category A).

The consultant will be expected to participate in Audit as part of the annual appraisal process. Participation in research activities is actively encouraged and supported. The hospital has a defined programme of medical audit which has recently been restructured.

Members of the Department of Radiology are active in the management and promotion of the Trust’s clinical Governance Strategy.

Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

A £338 million (PFI) investment has re-built and modernised both Whiston and St Helens Hospitals, resulting in modern state of the art health care facilities for the treatment and care of patients. St Helens Hospital was completed in 2008 and Whiston Hospital in 2010.

Whiston Hospital

Whiston Hospital a busy teaching hospital which provides a comprehensive range of acute Medical and Surgical Services, Emergency Services, Maternity Services, Paediatrics and Medicine for Older People. The Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Units are also based on this site.

There is a Critical Care Unit consisting of ICU, HDU, CCU and an onsite Cardiac Catheter Laboratory. The stroke consultants deliver 24/7 thrombolysis to eligible patients presenting with acute stroke. There is a 30-bed Stroke Unit which accommodates both acute stroke patients and those with rehabilitation needs.

St Helens Hospital

St Helens Hospital is an Ambulatory Care Centre providing Intermediate Care and Day Surgery. Rheumatology, Dermatology and Diabetes services are based on this site and within easy reach of other acute specialties at Whiston Hospital.

Southport Hospital

Southport Hospital is a General Hospital that includes adults’ accident and emergency services, intensive care, and a range of medical and surgical specialities. There is also an outpatients’ service. The North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport hospital provides specialist care for spinal patients from across the North West, North Wales, and the Isle of Man.

The hospital, which replaced the Southport General Infirmary and the Southport Promenade Hospital, opened in September 1988.

Ormskirk Hospital

Ormskirk Hospital is a General Hospital and provides women’s and children’s services, including accident and emergency services, surgery, and maternity care.

The hospital provides these services for patients living across West Lancashire, Southport, and Formby.

Essential criteria

  • Extensive clinical training and experience in Radiology
  • Specialist MDT experience in Urology and Gynaecology
  • Emergency imaging and on call experience
  • Proficient in USS/ Fluoroscopic guided procedures in MSK
  • Independent in reporting Cross-sectional Gynaecological imaging: MRI pelvis for malignancy, endometriosis, MRI ovaries.
  • Independent in reporting Cross-sectional Urological imaging such as MRI prostate, CT urograms
  • Proficient in General USS
  • Familiarity with PACs and other IT systems relevant with Radiology
  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience within the last 3 years
  • Able to supervise junior medical staff
  • Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit / research within team structure within the last 3 years
