This post is suitable for a person who wishes to undertake a range of duties in the Victoria Eye Unit, Powys Hospitals and associated peripheral clinics.
The department have 2 speciality doctor posts:
- 1 x 6 month post, Fixed Term (February 2025- August 2025)
- 1 x 12 month post, Fixed Term
The department currently have 8 consultants and training in new skills is part of the post and we would welcome a flexible personality who is keen to develop.
Main duties of the job
The appointed doctor will be accountable to the Clinical Lead for the Eye Service who will review and agree the required activities and responsibilities within the job planning process.
The appointed Specialty Doctor will work in hospital and community clinics within Herefordshire and see new and follow-up patients, following protocols and patient referral and treatment pathways.
Good patient and staff communication is essential.
The appointed Specialty Doctor will be involved in the training and supervision of junior members of medical staff, nursing and technical.
The appointed Specialty Doctor will have a good working knowledge of general ophthalmic diagnoses that might be encountered in practice. Evidence based and protocol based decision making is expected, under the supervision of the consultant or clinical lead.
The appointed Specialty Doctor is required to have or develop other skills of benefit to the acute trust such as Lucentis clinic work and minor operations. Appropriate evidence based and protocol based decision-making will be required under the supervision of the consultant or clinical lead.

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria- Full GMC registration with Licence to Practise
- Shall have completed at least 4 years’ full time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
- At least 12 months NHS Experience
- DRCOpht
- MCROphth
- FRCOphth or equivalent
Experience & Knowledge
Essential criteria- Experience of a wide range of clinical ophthalmology
- Good organisational skills and time management
Audit/Quality improvement
Essential criteria- Experience in and participation in audit
