Fixed term contract for 12 months. 8 sessions per week.

This is for a Specialty Dentist position based at Birmingham Dental Hospital within the Department of Oral Medicine with a close working relationship with the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry for the provision of Oral Medicine services and education for Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Main duties of the job

The main purpose of the post is to provide clinical services in relation to the management of patients referred to the Oral Medicine department. Additionally the appointee may be expected to assist in the teaching of undergraduate dental and dental hygiene and therapy students where appropriate.

The post holder will be expected to be competent at managing common oral medicine conditions and the discharge of clinical duties will be in accordance with Trust Policies and Procedures.
The post holder will be expected to develop a close working relationship with colleagues in Oral Medicine and the other dental and medical specialties.
Nursing and secretarial services are provided. Departmental administration and routine correspondence with referring clinicians are required of the post holder.
Full participation in hospital/departmental Quality Assurance, Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance programmes is a requirement of the post.

The post holder will be managerially accountable to the Head of Service for Oral .

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GDC
  • Shall have completed four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration, including adequate experience in the relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
Desirable criteria
  • FDS/MFDS/MJDF
  • On, or eligible for inclusion, GDC Specialist List in Oral Medicine
  • Evidence of relevant CPD in Oral Medicine

Experience/Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience in the management of simple oral mucosal and allied disease
  • Evidence of participation in audit
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to work clinically without supervision
  • Experience of oral mucosal biopsy and venepuncture techniques
  • Teaching experience
  • Willingness to participate in research

Special Aptitude/Activities

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • A basic working knowledge of medicine as it applies to Oral Medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Publications or formal presentation of papers at clinical or scientific meetings

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Good patient management and inter-personal skills.
  • Ability to work in team situation
Desirable criteria
  • Capacity for critical self-appraisal and reflective learning
  • Enthusiastic approach
  • Interest in teaching
