The Greener NHS function, launched in 2020, is responsible for supporting the system’s world-leading commitment to deliver a net zero health service by 2045.

This is a senior managerial role within the Greener NHS team, designed for an individual with the capability and interest in driving and delivering a rapid transition to low-carbon healthcare across the system.

As a Senior Manager, the post holder will work flexibly in different parts of the team on a variety of portfolios. This could be with our regional colleagues on all priority areas within the greener function, on a specific project within our travel and transport or estates and facilities work or leading a strategic priority with our external partners.

You will ensure alignment with NHS net zero commitments and other key NHS priorities set out in the NHS Long-Term Plan.

The team is seeking a highly organised and capable individual with leadership experience. The ideal candidate should be able to build collaborative relationships, manage complex programmes and projects with multiple interdependencies and stakeholders.

Joining a skilled, passionate, and friendly team, the post holder will work across different areas to ensure that our shared objectives are achieved.

This role would suit someone with a background of working in healthcare and climate change.

The Senior Manager will be involved in driving forward specific Greener NHS projects in a variety of different specialist areas, including but not exclusively, travel and transport, estates and facilities, regional delivery, international alliances and strategic levers. This could include:
  • Delivering projects using policy development, analysis and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Leading the delivery of agreed Greener NHS projects, including management of interdependencies within NHS England, and with other key stakeholders as required.
  • Ownership of specific project workstreams, seeing them through from start to end including problem-definition; multi-factorial analysis; options development and selection; and delivery of an agreed project plan.
  • Building productive and respectful relationships with other team members, other teams and Directorates and with external partners and stakeholders.
  • Developing and managing communications content and channels with a broad range of colleagues related to Greener NHS projects.
  • Facilitating group engagement to solve problems and build buy-in to solutions.
  • Helping to manage and mentor more junior members of the team.
  • Horizon scanning for the identification of net zero trends and innovations in health and healthcare, converting these into project proposals for the Greener NHS Programme where appropriate.
  • Working flexibly across the Greener NHS portfolio in support of the wider team.
The NHS England board have set out the top-level purpose for the new organisation to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all, which will inform the detailed design work and we will achieve this purpose by:
  • Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their people and patients and reduce health inequalities.
  • Making the NHS a great place to work, where our people can make a difference and achieve their potential.
  • Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care
  • Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation
  • Delivering value for money.
