A quick look at the role

As Head of Health & Safety for the Centre of Excellence, your role will be to support the Group H&S Director in implementing strategies and plans to improve H&S outcomes across Biffa. You will lead and direct a team of Managers and Advisors who will be responsible for a range of proactive and reactive tasks, all aimed helping Biffa to achieve excellence in Health & Safety.

Your core responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate the development of H&S risk identification and control strategies which allow for suitable and sufficient control of risks in the operational business.
  • Lead, manage and motivate a team of H&S professionals and other support staff to ensure that they are competent to carry out their roles and deliver an effective service.
  • Work collaboratively with the other businesses, sharing H&S best practice, championing common standards and continual improvement companywide.
  • Lead, coordinate and implement H&S continuous improvement projects & programmes to reduce the potential for adverse events and drive continuous improvement in H&S performance across Biffa.
  • Ensure a suite of impactful H&S communications materials is produced to support the attainment of H&S improvement projects in Biffa and the wider business. Where required develop performance improvement plans for the Biffa.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain a H&S performance monitoring programme providing the Group H&S Director with data, intelligent analysis and reports to enable and inform positive and proactive interventions.
  • Ensure that the Group Integrated Management system is fit for purpose (i.e., it serves the operational business) and continues to be certified to ISO9001/14001/45001.
  • Lead the health & safety workstream of the due diligence process for any new mergers & acquisitions, in line with company procedures and confidentiality arrangements.
  • Provide overall management of the EcoOnline software (both the EHS system and Sypol), ensuring that the systems continue to meet the needs of all parts of the business identifying opportunities to expand use where appropriate.
  • Work with the Learning & Organisational Development team in the review, development and rollout of health and safety training, ensuring that it aligns with company procedures and meets delegates needs.
Our essential requirements
  • Level 3 NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
  • Chartered Member of IOSH
  • 5 years experience supporting large organisations in developing and delivering H&S improvement strategies
  • Demonstrable experience of developing, managing and improving integrated management systems with a customer focus
  • Experience in being a member of a leadership team, making contributions outside of functional experience
