We are looking to appoint a whole time Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon with special interest in Breast Microsurgery Reconstruction, to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital for a fixed time period of 12 months

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues be responsible for the provision of benign and malignant breast surgery work, including microsurgical breast reconstruction, to ensure the continued development of the Sheffield breast surgery and reconstruction service at the Royal Hallamshire.

Furthermore, the post holder will support the Trauma service at Northern General site for general plastic trauma and semi-elective conditions.

The appointee will be part of a trauma on-call rota (1:18) covering both Trusts involving Northern General, Royal Hallamshire and the Sheffield Children’s hospital. They will have continuing responsibility for patients in their care and the proper functioning of the Department.

The appointee will undertake outpatient clinics, elective operating sessions, ward round duties and supporting activities amounting to 10 programmed activities per week.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • GMC registered with General Surgery (Breast) or Plastic Surgery Specialty
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD or equivalent

Teaching and Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad experience in the generality of Plastic Surgery with a particular emphasis on breast microsurgery & breast oncoplastic management, including complex breast reconstruction.
  • Needs to have current Safeguarding Child/Adult competencies
  • Good knowledge of modern surgical techniques including the use of skin substitutes and microsurgical techniques

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Clinical governance and audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience in performing clinical audit

Personal attributes

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values (see appendix)
  • Good oral and written communication skills
