The Bank Advanced Pharmacist plays a key leadership and specialist role within the clinical pharmacy service, delivering high-level pharmaceutical care to patients. This role includes managing and mentoring other pharmacy staff, supporting safe and cost-effective use of medicines, contributing to service development, and providing expert advice to clinical teams.

The postholder is expected to work flexibly and support the delivery of clinical pharmacy services aligned with local and national guidance, risk management practices, and medicines governance.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to pharmacy staff.
  • Deliver specialist pharmaceutical care and non-medical prescribing (within scope).
  • Support medicines optimisation and ensure safe, cost-effective use of medicines.
  • Participate in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Develop and implement guidelines and policies on medicines use.
  • Contribute to clinical audits, research, and service development.
  • Supervise and train junior pharmacists, technicians, and students.
  • Support clinical governance, risk management, and medicines safety initiatives.
  • Promote compliance with local and national prescribing guidance.
  • Maintain CPD and support staff development.
  • Participate in dispensary duties and other assigned tasks as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties:

  1. Clinical Leadership
  • Supervise and support pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
  • Provide professional and clinical leadership within the service line
  1. Specialist Pharmaceutical Care
  • Deliver expert clinical care, including prescribing within scope
  • Participate in consultant-led ward rounds and MDT meetings
  1. Medicines Optimisation
  • Ensure safe, effective, and evidence-based use of medicines
  • Promote compliance with formulary and guidelines
  1. Governance and Risk Management
  • Investigate and act on medication incidents
  • Support strategies to improve medicines safety
  1. Education and Training
  • Train and mentor pharmacy staff, students, and other healthcare professionals
  • Provide medicines education to patients and carers
  1. Service Development and Audit
  • Contribute to audits, quality improvement, and research projects
  • Review prescribing trends and make recommendations for improvement
  1. Policy and Guideline Development
  • Develop and update medicines-related policies and protocols
  • Advise on the introduction of new treatments
  1. Dispensary and General Duties
  • Participate in dispensary services when required
  • Fulfil Trust-wide responsibilities including CPD and adherence to policies

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Bachelor/Master of Pharmacy degree
  • GPhC pharmacist registration
  • Post graduate Diploma in clinical pharmacy practice or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • member of RPS
  • independent pharmacist prescriber
  • Post graduate masters in pharmacy

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of specialist practitioner practice
  • Experience of influencing members of the multidisciplinary team in delivering patient care.
  • Experience of clinically supervising and training staff
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable evidence of undertaking research and audit and using the results to improve patient care.
  • Experience of delivering education and training to undergraduates and postgraduates of various healthcare professions

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of relevant standards and guidelines
  • Knowledge of legislation/guidance relating to medicines usage and prescribing
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of the current commissioning arrangements in the NHS
