The University Hospitals Bristol & Weston (UHBW) NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint a full-time post of Haematology Specialty Doctor in The Bristol Haematology Unit based at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC).

This is a 2 year post, with the potential to extend to a permanent position, providing care for patients with haematological conditions, mainly haematological malignancies including patients who have undergone stem cell transplantation. UHBW is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, rated ‘outstanding’ by the CQC in 2016 and 2019 and a major teaching and research centre for the South West.

The job is based in the recently built Bristol Haematology Unit, which comprises a 25 bedded in-patient unit, an apheresis unit, a Teenage and Young Adult Unit (TYA), Same Day Emergency Care unit and Chemotherapy Day Unit, shared with oncology.

We are looking for enthusiastic doctors, with experience in haematology, to join an expanding service. The successful candidate will require flexibility and excellent communication skills as well as being reliable and well organised. You will need to be able to work both independently and as part of the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will take part in haematology clinics and laboratory haematology reporting. They will have the opportunity to undertake clinical supervision of junior doctors within the department. The post-holders will also have responsibilities to develop and contribute to continuing education, professional development, audit and research within the Trust and the University.

Person specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • 4 years or more full time post graduate experience (or its equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis), at least 2 years of which has been in an adult general medicine speciality which can be relevant to Haematology
  • General adult medicine (minimum 2 years)
  • Experience working within haematology
  • Ability to perform lumber punctures
  • Ability to perform bone marrow biopsies
Desirable criteria
  • Bone marrow stem cell transplantation

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good spoken and written English that is adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleague
  • Computer skills. Able to use Microsoft Office, e-mail, internet, PACS
  • Able to undertake and to delegate responsibility.
  • Ability to cope with stress
  • Good communication skills
  • Teaching: evidence of interest and experience in teaching where required in the job
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of principles of Audit and willingness to participate in projects

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Registration with GMC
Desirable criteria
  • FRCPath or equivalent specialist haematology qualification
