Research Nurse
Job overview
The post holder will be responsible for the recruitment to and follow up of patients onto research studies and clinical trials.
This role includes data collection, adherence to ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research and assisting in the continued improvement in the care of research participants and the quality of research data.
The post holder will work collaboratively with the wider multi-disciplinary teams in the management of clinical trial participants
The post is intended to provide a registered nurse with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate independently within a research team. The post-holder will work in conjunction with experienced members of the NGH research team to work towards ownership of key research studies.
Main duties of the job
To work alongside Principal Investigators and the research team to assist in the delivery of a high-quality research service of clinical expertise, professional advice, support, guidance and education to the multi-disciplinary team, patients and carers.
Work will be in accordance with ICH-GCP guidelines for the conduct of clinical research trials.

Supporting Clinical Excellence
Assist with the recruitment of patients onto clinical trials, in conjunction with the wider multi-disciplinary team.
Responsible for the follow up of patients on clinical trials, according to trial protocols, and specific trial related delegated duties.
Responsible for the collection of research specific data, and safe transfer of that data to external sponsor sites.
Work as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team to care for patients throughout their journey through a clinical trial and assist in the transfer to appropriate ongoing follow up care.

Ensures that agreed standards of care using evidence-based research are adhered to.
To become actively involved in the regular auditing and monitoring of all clinical trials.
To ensure that the highest quality of care is provided to patients and carers at all times.

Act as a mentor or associate mentor to other qualified and unqualified staff following an appropriate and agreed period of experience
A confident and flexible attitude is required to support a varied and growing research portfolio.
Professional Responsibilities
To act in accordance with the NMC Code ensuring standards and behaviours are adhered to as laid down by the Nursing and Midwifery Council
Maintains a professional portfolio and takes responsibility for own continuing professional development.
Complete Band 5 competencies within an agreed time frame
Ensure effective communication, both verbal and written, to all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
The post holder may be required to carry out other relevant duties as required
The post holder will adhere to, at all times, any Professional, NHS Code of Conducts and legislation relevant for their area of work.
The post holder will be expected to undertake training, including mandatory and role specific training, relevant to their role and ensure it is renewed as required
Policy and Service Development Responsibilities
To have some knowledge of the Health and Safety at work Act, COSHH and Risk Management.
Become conversant with the policies of the Department and Trust
The post holder will familiarize themselves with, and adhere to at all times, the policies and procedures of the Trust, including Standard Operating Procedures in their area of work.
Other
To undertake mandatory training as required by the individual Trust and additional clinical, research and IT training as required by the research studies.
Work to SOP’s, applicable regulatory requirements and laws as per required and applicable to each research study, department
Person specification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria- Demonstrable experience as a registered nurse (adult), within an acute hospital environment.
- Experience of caring for patients involved in research studies
- Awareness of current issues in healthcare research
- Awareness of ICH GCP
Educations, Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria- Registered Nurse
- Educated to degree level or equivalent level of education, training or experience
- Up-to-date professional portfolio as proven knowledge base.
- Awareness of clinical research.
Skills
Essential criteria- An ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and contribute to team building.
- An ability to recognise own limitations and to seek advice from senior members of staff.
- An ability to remain calm in any situation.
- An ability to read and understand clinical trial protocols
